  • What History and Science Have to Say About Cannabis

If you don’t already know, the medical marijuana revolution is starting to sprout across the countryNot surprisingly, more positive clinical studies and anecdotal evidence point in the same direction as scientists, health practitioners, and patients rediscovering the healing benefits of this amazing plant—and so should you.

  •

    History of Medical Marijuana

    medical marijuana history

Medical marijuana is an all-natural remedy that man has been using for thousands of years.

In fact, references to cannabis sativa have been found in ancient texts from Egypt, China, and Greece. The builders of the great pyramids used marijuana to treat tumors; Chinese emperor Shennong (circa 2737 BC) believed it helped rheumatism; and the Greeks used it to treat ear pain and body inflammation.

Marijuana was introduced to modern Western medicine in the 1830s by Irish physician William Brooke O’Shaughnessy. The renowned, highly respected doc wrote extensively on cannabis’ medical applications, which he used to successfully treat rheumatism and convulsions.

He was also something of a polymath as he wrote books on cryptography, was knighted by Queen Victoria (a fellow cannabis supporter) for his contributions to developing the telegraph, and is credited for pioneering tetanus and rabies treatments.

    Medical Marijuana in America

    America Medical Marijuana

In America, cannabis was listed in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from 1851 to 1941. However, the advent of anti-marijuana hysteria in the late 1930s ultimately led to its current federal prohibition. Today it’s greatly inhibited scientific research and medical usage, but, luckily, the tide seems to be turning.

Back in 1999, Drug Czar Barry McCaffery claimed there was “not a shred of evidence marijuana is medicine.” His ill-informed perspective had a short shelf life.

In 2000, an NIH study became the first mainstream acknowledgment that cannabis has legitimate therapeutic benefitsIn this instance, the report concluded that medical marijuana was effective in alleviating conditions such as nausea and the wasting disease associated with chemotherapy, cancer, and AIDS.

While the findings were limited to a narrow set of medical conditions—mainly because federal cannabis restrictions virtually prohibit large-scale clinical trials—they were nonetheless an important departure from the government’s official orthodoxy.

    Newfound American Medical Interest

Eighteen years later, marijuana is regaining enormous scientific respect and is finally on the verge of becoming mainstream medicine.

Earlier this year the National Academy of Science, Medicine, and Engineering (NASME) released the most comprehensive report on cannabis ever compiled. The 400-page meta-analysis included data from more than 10,000 individual studies.

In it, the committee reached the following conclusion: medical marijuana proved successful in treating:

    • Chronic pain in adults.
    • Nausea and wasting disease in patients undergoing chemotherapy.
    • Muscle spasticity in multiple sclerosis (MS).
    • Reduce dependency on and need for possibly addictive and deadly opioid-based pain medications.

The NASME study hardly endorses medical marijuana for every condition under the sun. However, it’s a definitive statement by the scientific and medical communities refuting the government’s irrational and unscientific classification of cannabis as a Schedule I drug.

Summing up the report’s findings, Harvard pediatrician Marie McCormick writes, “It is often difficult for researchers to gain access to the quantity, quality, and type of cannabis product necessary to address specific research questions on the health effects of cannabis use.”

The report also acknowledges that because cannabis has therapeutic value it specifically calls for “political and non-political strategies to resolve regulatory barriers to cannabis research,” meaning “an objective and evidence-based analysis of cannabis policy is necessary.”

Why Is Marijuana Such a Promising Medicine?

    promising medical marijuana

Homeostasisor well-being and balanceis mediated in large part by a network of receptors and hormonal signals that constitute the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Endocannabinoid receptors are stimulated by substances that the human body makes naturally called endocannabinoids, which are very similar phytocannabinoids, the cannabinoids marijuana plants produce naturally. These receptors are embedded throughout the bodyin the brain, the nervous system, the immune system, tissue, and within cellular membranes.

The most famous of these, THC, is psychoactive and is largely responsible for marijuana’s mind-expanding properties. However, cannabis also contains non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBD and CBN. Scientists believe these compounds can produce health benefits by working through the body’s endocannabinoid system.

The role of the ECS is to transmit and receive signals that regulate all levels of bodily function so it functions at its best. It manages pain signals at the site of tissue damage, resolves the immune system’s response to inflammation, and regulates the basic processes in which cells degrade, synthesize, and recycle cellular compounds.

So, if there’s tissue damage, the ECS will mediate pain signals and cellular repairs. Essentially, the goal of the endocannabinoid system is to detect imbalances and correct them.

In short, the ECS can be thought of as the intersection between mind and body. If impaired or damaged, chronic pain, immune dysfunction, and mood disorders can arise. And because the ECS is central to a process called autophagy, when old and unhealthy cells are naturally disposed of, it’s also central to the prevention and inhibition of tumor growth.

A few medical conditions that could develop if the body’s endocannabinoid system is impaired include:

    • Autism
    • Autoimmune diseases
    • Chronic pain (arthritis)
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Neurodegenerative disease
    • Psychological disorders (depression)

    Medical Marijuana Products

    products medical marijuana

Recreational marijuana use typically involves smoking or vaping the herb. However, many health practitioners and patients (maybe even yourself) are wary of ingesting mmj this way.

Thankfully, cannabis’ benefits can be delivered in a variety of ways. Marijuana oil extracts, THC-infused edibles, CBD-infused edibles, topical lotions, and even time-release transdermal patches are just a few of the many delivery methods available today.

There are also non-psychoactive CBD oil tinctures for those who want the health benefits without the high. In fact, mmj has become a personalized medicine since dispensaries, weed growers, and cannabis companies can now cultivate countless strains and develop innumerable products to suit the unique needs of each patient.

    Testimonials

“Cannabis is the single most versatile herbal remedy, and the most useful plant on Earth. No other single plant contains as wide a range of medically active herbal constituents.” —Dr. Ethan Russo, Cannabinoid Research Institute

“Contrary to what we’ve all been mistaught [marijuana is] not a very harmful drug…it’s a drug remarkably free of toxicity providing it’s used intelligently.” —Dr. Lester Grinspoon, Harvard Medical School

“The evidence is overwhelming that marijuana can relieve certain types of pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms…And it can do so with remarkable safety. Indeed, marijuana is less toxic than many of the drugs that physicians prescribe every day.”  —Dr. Jocelyn Elders, Former Surgeon General of the U.S.

When Will Medical Marijuana Become Completely Legit?

Humans have used marijuana medicinally for millennia, and throughout this time there hasn’t  been a single dose-related fatality in all medical literature. As the National Cancer Institute notes, “Because cannabinoid receptors, unlike opioid receptors, are not located in the brainstem areas controlling respiration, lethal overdoses from cannabis and cannabinoids do not occur.”

Thus, cannabis has one of the safest therapeutic ratios in all of medicines.

The federal government’s past propaganda and unwarranted prohibition of cannabis has been a historical aberration that’s crumbling under the weight of undeniable scientific and medical truth.

With the scientific and medical communities firmly behind it, and now that 89% of Americans approve of medical marijuana, it’s only a matter of time before the federal government corrects its mistake by helping make medical cannabis mainstream medicine.

    The Marijuana Chef Cookbook

cannabis cooking the marijuana chef cookbook

This is the OG of cannabis cookbooks, helping people become marijuana chefs for over a decade.

At $15 for paperback and $10 for an e-reader, this cookbook has 55 recipes, plus 15 more in the latest edition. It includes sections on starters, desserts, main courses, vegetarian options, and cannabis beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic)

But that’s not all. The beginning chapters walk you through the cannabis basics and provide instructions on how to make infused basics like cannabis oil, butter, and alcohol. A must have for any aspiring cannabis chef!

  • How to Host an Intimate & Memorable Cannabis Session at Home

For many, cannabis is seen strictly as medicine. But it’s also becoming a preferred social alternative to alcohol and other “party” drugs. More and more people are having friends over for a casual smoke session rather than a wild night of bar hopping.

The group smoke circle is a sacred part of being a weed consumer. In states like California recreational use will soon be up and running, making it easier to have cannabis sessions with all your friends, not just those who are mmj patients.

Want to host a group cannabis session at your place? Make sure your smoke session is inviting, fun and safe by following these tips.

  •

Make Sure Everyone Has an MMJ Rec

Nothing ruins a smoke session faster than the cops showing up. Legally speaking, California’s recreational laws aren’t fully in place just yet. So until then, be sure everyone at your pot party has a legal medical marijuana recommendation and remind them to bring it just in case.

If they don’t, tell them to get one from NuggMD for only $49! Your guests can even get it at your party (depending on the time) and will be ready to participate in minutes.

    cannabis session rec

Remember: in the eyes of the law cannabis consumption is just like drinking alcohol, so driving after a smoke session is a bad idea.

    Break Out Some Lively Decorations

This isn’t an absolute requirement, but decorations can set the mood and enhance your guests’ experience. Consuming cannabis heightens your senses, so having items around the room that sound, feel, taste, smell and look good will make everyone have a better time.

    decorations cannabis session

You don’t have to spend a ton of money decking out your living room. Get your creative juices flowing and use items around your home to set the mood for your cannabis session.

Break out the fun ashtrays, lighters, and your favorite personal glass pieces you don’t mind others using. If you have throw pillows or bean bags, set them around the room so everyone can sit comfortably. Light aromatic candles that smell amazing. Have Christmas lights stored away? Bring them out of your closet and plug them in for mellow mood lighting!

Ask Your Guests to Bring Something Shareable

Sharing is caring! Ask your guests to bring a cannabis product they can share as a group: flower, concentrates, tinctures, a new topical, or edibles they love.

Remember, not everyone feels comfortable smoking so ask them to bring a wide range of products to ensure everyone’s comfortable and involved. Edibles, drinkables, and tinctures are easiest and won’t leave any odor if you’re worried about the law.

Looking for great shareable products? These will help you score points with the crowd.

    Drink

Try VCC’s popular Cannabis Quencher, infused lemonades and juices available in 100 or 200 milligram THC doses. They’re great for those just getting their cannabis sea legs to try a literally refreshing mmj product. Keep in mind that infused drinks can start to take effect in a few minutes compared to edibles, which can take an hour or more.

    cannabis session cannabis quencher

Choose from a variety of flavors including grape, mango, hibiscus, passion fruit, lemonade, and pomegranate-blueberry açaí. They come in standard plastic bottles so pass out some red plastic cups and start pouring. Because of their potency two 200mg bottles, around $25 each, should go a long way for a group of ten, depending on individual tolerance.

But if you’re worried about accurate dosing, there are Cannabis Quencher Sips in mini 25mg bottles. You should also request one of their CBD:THC drinks (40:40, 5:20, 10:10, 10:1) just in case someone overdoes it.

    Food

If you’re looking for fun shareable edible options, try To Whom It May’s stylish, gourmet mmj chocolate boxes. The brand’s large Party Palette will surely make you the host or hostess of the year. This impressive box of sweets will attract every guest, from the experienced cannabis consumer to the complete newbie.

    cannabis session Party Palette

The Party Palette includes “one column each of our four flavors, and each flavor with a piece of each dose – 2½ mg / 5 mg / 15 mg / 45 mg – and eight non-medicated chocolates.” Beware, at $230 the palette is pricey so you may want to save it for a special occasion or have a group of guests split it.

Looking for a cheaper shareable alternative? Try LOL Edibles’ giant medicated krispie bars. Weighing in at a whopping 1800mg for only $50, this behemoth comes in three different flavors: Chocolate (Cocoa Krispies), Frooty (Fruity Pebbles) and Original (Rice Krispies). Be sure to have a ruler, large knife or a pizza cutter handy to divide it equally.

Unlike the more popular 1,000mg Korova Black Bars that are about the same price, these edibles aren’t as potent, an advantage when everyone’s trying different cannabis incarnations at once. The only problem is that these might be a little hard to find, so let Nugg’s cannabis delivery marketplace locate the nearest to you.

    Smoke

You’ll be the coolest one in the room when you whip out a pack of Island pre-rolls. Inspired by 70s coastal California culture, these ready-made joints are not only beautifully branded but made with high quality, small batch cannabis broken down by hand. Plus their papers are made from unrefined hemp so you can be sure what you’re inhaling is natural and light.

    island pre-rolls cannabis session

Their Island Mini’s are perfect for a party with five mini-joints in each pack for $30. Or go big with Island Premiums with eight full-sized joints, which look like cigarettes without the tobacco, for $40

Encourage Social Interactions with Smokables & Vapes

While it’s important to provide mmj options for friends who can’t or don’t want to smoke, no circle is complete without at least one communal joint, blunt, bong, pipe or vape passed around the room.

Set some different flower options out with a grinder so your guests can refill as necessary. If you want to stay germ-free but still share, keeping your vape and bowl clean is as easy as having some alcohol wipes nearby. Encourage more social interaction by investing in a share-friendly vaporizer. You can go old school with a Vapor Brother’s Standard vaporizerand whip ($215).

These vapes allow for easy sharing by using a whip (a mouthpiece attached to a plastic or rubber hose) that’s easily passed around a smoke circle. Simply clean the whip with wipes between passes to stay germ-free.

vapor brothers vaporizer kit cannabis session

Or try investing in something a little more modern with a Volcano Vaporizer ($479). Volcanos vaporize cannabis flower into a large plastic bag with a mouthpiece. These vaporizers are really excellent for group scenarios because you can inhale as much as you want, cap it, and pass the bag along or save what’s left for a little later.

    volcano vaporizer cannabis sessions

While it seems expensive, it’ll be the last vaporizer you ever buy as the hits are big and clean. After all, you can’t put a price on your guests’ health. If you prefer joints but the thought of soggy joints grosses you out, you aren’t alone. There are ways to share cannabis without sharing as many of germs. A soggy joint end is the worst. Avoid this mishap by making sure you use a filter when rolling. If you want to really avoid saliva build up, invest in a glass mouthpiece like Cypress Hill’s  Phuncky Feel Tips.

    phunky tips cannabis session

These glass tips are placed into the joint paper as you roll and provide a nice, glass mouthpiece at the end. The best part? They cost less than $10 a piece.

    Pick an Appropriate Music Playlist

No party is complete without a soundtrack. Remember, just because you’re consuming cannabis doesn’t mean every song has to reference weed. Be sure to include an eclectic variety of genres and artists in your playlists so no one gets bored. Text your invitees and ask them for song suggestions to include.

    cannabis session music

We suggest starting with more mellow music like downtempo, trip-hop or jazz then upping the bpm as the party becomes more lively. Don’t have time to curate your own playlist? No problem. Choose from several online services like Pandora, Spotify, SoundCloud, MixCloud and even YouTube that basically do the work for you.

    Provide Snacks & Non-Mediated & Non-Alcoholic Beverages

Whatever you do, don’t forget the snacks! Nothing ends a cannabis session quicker than an onset of the munchies and no snacks to satiate them.

The only thing worse than having nothing to nibble on is only having all-medicated snacks. Make sure you provide a nice spread with healthy (veggie plate, dried fruits, trail mix) and junk food (chips, candies, cookies) options to please every palette.

Cottonmouth is real thing, just like the munchies. Provide some non-medicated, non-alcohol drink options to ease dry throats and help wash down snacks. Cannabis pairs well with coffee and delicious fresh juices, especially mango as it’s rumored to enhance cannabis’ effects. Ask your friends to pitch in by bringing a few snacks and drinks too!

    Have Games to Play

This isn’t a cannabis session requirement, but it’s definitely an awesome addition! Playing games are great ways to get your guests to become present and engaged with each other rather than scrolling on their phones.

Try an involved, strategic classic like Settlers of Catan (a Nugg HQ fav) or something a little simpler like Sorry! or Clue. Maybe something newer and funnier is more up your alley? Try Cards Against Humanity or Heads Up for a looser atmosphere.

    cannabis session Catan

Should you want to be the real MVP of hosting a cannabis session, buy the Cards Against Humanity Weed Pack add-on for $5. This pack comes with 30 new weed-related game cards, and all profits go to the Marijuana Policy Project, an organization that fights for cannabis to be regulated and taxed like alcohol across the country.

    games cannabis session

Stick with these tips and you’ll be set to host your own cannabis session. Just remember to consume wisely and encourage your guests to do the same.

If you have questions about which cannabis products are best to entertain guests, ask Nugg’s Cannabis Concierge, our live chat service that offers free advice on the best products in your area.

  • Tired of Flower? Try These Distinct Concentrate Brands

Even for the most experienced flower child, the world of concentrates can be intimidating. It feels like every time you visit the dispensary there’s a brand new extraction incarnation under the counter. Trying to wade through this myriad of choices can be a real head-scratcher.

That’s why knowing some concentrate brands and what they make can go a long way to help you feel confident and comfortable about using them.

  • What you'll learn in this post:

[Click any of the section titles below to jump there]

    What Are Cannabis Concentrates?

    concentrates brands

“Concentrate,” aka an extract, is really just an umbrella term for extremely strong, or concentrated, marijuana products resulting from a specific extraction process. They come in several distinct types like oil in vape cartridges, shatter for dab rigs, and tincture drops to squeeze under your tongue.

The difference between types of concentrates lies within their extraction method. Some of the most common extraction forms use butane, carbon dioxide, ice water, subzero temperatures and other solvents.

    Why Use Concentrates?

Concentrates have become wildly popular, with data showing massive growth in this segment of the cannabis industry. With all the demand for concentrates and all the investment in new products, we’re living in a golden age for the highly potent form of cannabis.

Why do people enjoy concentrates so much? They’re highly potent so you don’t need much; some brands boast up to almost 100% THC!

For mmj patients, weed reductions are a more efficient way of consuming stronger amounts of THC and/or CBD needed to effectively manage their symptoms and conditions. Those with more grave illnesses vape or eat them for more convenience and less lung stress.

On the other hand, for recreational users, concentrates are newer, more potent ways to relax in the ever-evolving world of cannabis consumption.

Now let’s check out some of the more notable concentrate brands.

    Concentrate Brands You Must Try

With all the demand for extracts, concentrate brands are coming out with great new products for practically every cannabis user. While this list includes several companies with vape cartridges, we wanted to include brands making concentrates beyond the usual carts or wax. There are so many high potency products out there, so spread your wings and open your mind to trying them all!

    Absolute Extracts

    absolute extracts concentrate brands

ABX has quality vape cartridges, made from 100% cannabis oil and available in specific strains. But the company also has some really awesome options beyond just carts for you California patients.

If you’re wary of smoking or any form of inhalation, try their ABX Cannabis Soft Gels. These capsules have three simple ingredients: cannabis oil, coconut oil and gelatin. They come in three doses, 10mg ($15, $50), 25mg ($20, $75) and 50mg ($40, $100), each available in with 5 or 24 soft gels.

They might seem a bit pricey, but if you’re looking for perfectly dosed, long-lasting relief these concentrated gel caps are worth it.

    Bloom Farms

    concentrate brands Bloom Farms

This concentrate company makes a great CO2 oil derived from cannabis sourced from sustainable, small batch family farms. It’s available in indica, sativa, hybrid and CBD refill cartridges ($30) or with their cute, sleek vape pens, or “highlighters” ($50)—truly the California way!

If you’re looking for a more refined concentrated experience, try their strain-specific “Single Origin” cartridges (around $35) and their newest, most stylish and luxurious vape pen, “Rose Gold” (about $60). The revamped model has a new design, gold finish and FDA grade hybrid cartridge.

All carts contain 500mg of THC or CBD, are cost-effective and last around 150-200 puffs.

Bloom Farms doesn’t just provide medicine. As a one-for-one company, they give back to the community by donating a meal to someone hungry for each of their products sold.

    The Clear

    concentrate brands the clear

Looking for a totally pure, solvent-free concentrates? Look no further than The Clear.

The brand endeavors to make the cleanest, strongest and most pleasurable cannabis products on the market. Their non-BHO purification process involves winterizing, removing unwanted and unhealthy plant fats, and decarboxylation, activating the THC inside to ensure the best product.

With up to 96% THC, their translucent oils are ideal for mmj patients looking for serious pain relief. All their concentrates can be smoked, vaped, dabbed, applied topically, and even eaten!

The Clear’s medical focus has allowed them to create an eclectic variety of concentrate-based products. These include: rosin, saltwater hash, honey buckets, and balms.

They’ve also partnered with Clean Healing to create the first line of infused pizza sauces

    Dank Tanks

    concentrate brands dank tanks

Dank Tanks offer a butane and tar-free premium cannabis oil, wax, crumble and shatter. All concentrated-based products are sourced from the best medical marjiuana and derived from a supercritical CO2 extraction process.

While their other products are great, their 510-threaded cartridges are the best value, as one gram (about $40) lasts up to 150 hits. The company claims they taste just like a dab, only without the hassle or harshness. Overall, the sweet, fruity flavor and an effective high are perfect for a very mellow, lazy afternoon.

    Fruit Lust

    concentrate brands fruit labs

Made from Humboldt-farmed, pesticide-free cannabis, these fruit flavored vape pens are expertly crafted. They contain THC levels between 58%-62%, look super sleek and modern, and are very affordable ($35).

But what really makes this brand unique is their wide range of natural fruit flavors enhanced with proprietary terpene blends. Try all ten: apple, banana, blueberry, grape, grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, raspberry, strawberry, and tangerine.

    Guild Extracts

Guild Extracts is a whole new type of concentrate brand. They’re a team of extraction scientists really pushing the envelope on R&D and product innovation.

Guild caused quite the stir throughout the cannabis community by releasing extracts that don’t look like your average cannabis product.

Take, for example, their strain-specific THCa Cystalline, a pure isolate that tests at 99-100% potency and costs $110 for .5 grams. It converts to THC when vaped or is non-psychoactive when ingested orally. They also have a CBD version as well as THCa Powder, another of the purest extracts in the world.

The brand also has more mainstream concentrates like their vape cartridges, shatter, CBD Sap (great for mmj patients), sugar, high terpene extracts (HTE), and, my favorite, live resin.

    Jetty Extracts

    concentrate brands jetty extracts

San Diego’s Jetty Extracts have a pretty full line of extracted products, including CO2 vape cartridges, e-juice and CO2 wax. But their coolest product has to be the Dablicator” ($50).

Way less messy than a syringe and much more accurate that grabbing whatever amount of wax you want, this dope little device is full of high-quality CO2 wax concentrate and only needs a few turns to dispense.

In my opinion, Jetty is one of the most refreshing, potent California concentrate brands so certainly give it a try…even Tommy Chong thinks so.

    Quality Concentrates

    concentrate brands quality concentrates

Quality Concentrates is focused on making an impact for medical cannabis patients. As a result, they produce pure, potent, high quality concentrates in a high-tech lab using bio-tech stainless steel hydrocarbon extractors.

Made from plants they grow themselves, their concentrates come in a variety of strains: XJ-13, a sativa-dominant hybrid with a low level of CBD and high level of THC that can help with depression and pain relief; Critical Kush, an indica-dominant hybrid made from Critical Mass and OG Kush great for anxiety relief and sleep; and  many more.

Quality Concentrates are reasonably priced at $20-$30 for a half gram.

  • Has the Rastafarian Stereotype Permanently Hurt Weed’s Rep?

Remember when you first learned about cannabis? You didn’t just learn about the plant, but about its culture and the types of people who use it. Regardless of how you came to discover ganja, it’s clear that being a medical or recreational user comes with several clichés.

One of the most iconic marijuana symbols, the Rastafarian stereotype has inadvertently perpetuated a false notion of the blissful, lazy stoner that’s become synonymous with cannabis users in general. This stigma has helped set a false precedent that some of the public and lawmakers see as definitive.

Will the outlook of the lazy Rastafarian, and ultimately the average cannabis user, change, or is it too ingrained in our society?

  •

A Brief History of Rastafari Religion

    Rastafarian stereotype flag

When you think of Rastafarians, you probably think of Bob Marley, dreadlocks, tons of weed and a care-free Caribbean lifestyle. But this is far from an accurate depiction of the Rastafari religion and those who practice it.

Rastafarianism was developed in the 1930’s in Jamaica. The faithful believe that Ethiopian King and Emperor Haile Selassie I is the incarnation of Jah, or God, and the Second Coming of Christ. He will return to Earth to reunite all Africans displaced by colonization and bring them back to the Ethiopian motherland, ensuring a new age of peace and prosperity.

Currently, there are about one million Rastafari practitioners worldwide.

Rasta ceremonies include rhythmic chanting, meditation, and increased spiritual awareness through marijuana. While using cannabis to get closer to God may seem like a foreign idea to many, it’s a means to build a spiritual community and strengthen the physical one.

Author and historian Leonard Barrett writes, “Rastafarians first began using marijuana in reaction to the treatment of blacks in society. It became a reactionary device to enable freedom from the establishment.”

Yet when we think of Rasta’s, we don’t think about a respected religion, but about a group of lazy, permanently stoned individuals with long dreds. This is by no means the whole picture.

Why Does This Rastafarian Stereotype Exist?

    Rastafarian stereotype rasta village

Cannabis as a means to enhance and reaffirm religious beliefs—that’s something we can all get behind, right? The emergence of Bob Marley, the iconic Rasta musician who smoked cannabis frequently and openly, helped mold not just the Rastafarian stereotype, but that of reggae musicians and Jamaicans in general.

Reggae music emulates many of the ideals and beliefs central to the Rastafarian religion. While Marley’s songs portrayed cannabis as a religious tool, our society didn’t see it that way. Rather our culture saw marijuana as a vice that was apart of his “rock star” lifestyle, forever cementing cannabis use and the image of the lazy Rasta.

I challenge you to view reggae music and its representatives like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Gregory Isaacs through a different lens.

Imagine some of their greatest songs. The beats, rhythms, and mellow chanting of the lyrics are meditative; the messages are hopeful, call for social change, and community activism. The Rasta’s desire to spread love and positivity through reggae demonstrates their incredible awareness and desire to connect with everyone across gender, race and social standing—I’d say that’s far from lazy!

Good People Really Do Smoke Marijuana

    Rastafarian stereotype good people smoking

Chances are you’re reading this from a mobile device during your morning commute. Maybe you’re drinking coffee, wearing a suit, and ordering your medicine from Nugg. Maybe you just got off a 12-hour shift, made dinner, and finally get to curl up on the couch and replenish.

Regardless of who you are, where you come from or what you do, marijuana use hasn’t sucked the energy of out life. Instead, using it has changed yours for the better; cannabis allows you to spend less time feeling crummy and more time doing the things you love.

If you’re nodding in agreement, there’s something you can do about correcting the lazy Rasta stereotype, and the blanket stereotype of all users. Opponents of cannabis play on this stereotype, especially when federal legalization is a distinct possibility. In a not-so-surprising statement, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said, “Good people don’t smoke marijuana.”

When a prominent politician makes a blatantly biased remark like this, who do you think he’s referring to? Sessions, like most of his Republican counterparts, is playing on the lazy cannabis user stereotype stemming from Rastas.

He’s ignoring the fact that active senior citizens, veterans, parents, athletes, and even children have all benefited from marijuana. This plant doesn’t drain life; it gives life.

The truth must be told and, luckily, you have a voice. Be heard and help to challenge the stigma and change the perception behind cannabis use.

How You Can Change the Stereotype

There are a number of steps you can take to dispel common cannabis stereotypes.

    1. Contact your local, state, and federal representatives. Tell them your story. Be sure to include your name, your experience with cannabis, and how it helps you live a more comfortable life.
    2. Don’t stop at contacting your legislators and participate in the legal process. Attend conferences, learn about the cannabis programs in your state, and attend cannabis-friendly community movements. If you’re willing to be visible about your support for cannabis, do so on every level.
    3. Talk to your kids (if you have them). Traditionally, discussions surrounding cannabis are deemed inappropriate for children. Normalize cannabis in your household. Start the conversation so that they will feel comfortable and eventually use cannabis responsibility and safety.

    Conclusion

Whether it’s the lazy Rastafarian stereotype or one of the many other cannabis clichés, they’re not just going to disappear. As cannabis continues to help people, we must share our experiences and stories with others. By sharing a part of ourselves we can help to dispel the idea behind this and other cannabis stereotypes that prevent its full understanding.
