Trichomes

Trichrome Extraction

The trichomes aren’t just the sticky resin that glues to your fingers when handling buds, they’re also what contains most of the active medicinal cannabis compounds. They’re the breeding grounds for THC, the active chemical compound that creates the “head-high” you get from consuming cannabis.

Trichomes have attracted a certain fascination among cannabis aficionados. Under a microscope (or magnifying glass) they look like translucent stalks with rounded heads. These resinous, hairlike structures have evolved as a defense mechanism, protecting the plant against insect predators and the effects of UV sunlight. But they’re also so much more.

THC and cannabinoids are manufactured in only one location—the globular head of the trichomes. All of marijuana’s psychoactive and medicinal properties derive from these bulbous glands. So, next time you light up you can thank those sticky-icky trichomes (pictured below) for sending you to the stratosphere with each puff.

Kief

Kief Extraction

Kief is the easiest cannabis concentrate to make, and therefore one of the most popular. Basically, kief is made by separating trichomes (the crystalline structures that coat the outside of the dried marijuana flowers) from whole-plant material using a weed grinder, to produce a fine, light powder that resembles very granular sand. It isn’t considered the highest quality extract out there, but THC levels can typically be 3 to 4 times more concentrated than in unprocessed cannabis.

To produce the fine kief-powder we’re talking about, you’ll need a capable cannabis grinder. Weed grinders have specially designed teeth (made out of metals or plastic and sometimes wood, but metals are by far the most effective) that work to pulverize cannabis as you rotate the device in a circular motion.

If your goal is to produce & capture as much kief as possible, you’ll need to be sure your grinder has a kief-catcher (a bottom chamber with a metal screen above it, which only allows for the fine particles of kief to fall below it).

If you can’t access a grinder, many users also use blenders and food processors to powderize their stash; this can be a dangerous game to play if your goal is kief accumulation, since the fine sticky particles can stick to the sides of your device and escape capture.

Using Kief

Ok, you’ve collected your first batch of kief, now what? Kief can be sprinkled on joints, in bowls, or on bong hits. However, because kief is so finely powdered it’ll burn differently than regular cannabis.

Joints with pure kief are hard to roll and they can burn incredibly fast. As a result, most kief enthusiasts recommend sprinkling it on traditional weed before rolling a “J” and lighting up.

Kief bowls burn better, but remember you’re smoking concentrated marijuana, so pack your bowl accordingly as a small kief hit can go a long way. It can also be used to make cannabutter and other marijuana edibles. As a general rule, if a recipe calls for 1 cup of cannabis you can probably substitute 1/4 cup of kief and achieve the same dosage levels.

Hash

Hash Extraction

Hash is a potent cannabis extract that’s been used for centuries throughout Asia, the Arab world and India. It was introduced to the West in the 19th century when literary giants like Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, and Charles Baudelaire consumed hashish in Parisian nightclubs.

Hashish is made by separating the resinous trichomes, which contains marijuana’s active ingredients, from the plant material. There are a variety of ways to do this, from dry sifting kief (see above) to the use of liquid solvents. In fact, if you can make kief then you’re only one step away from making a simple form of hash, which can be no as easy as pressing high-quality kief into a block or ball using a pollen press or even your fingers.

Lightly heating the kief while applying pressure is just a slightly more involved process, making for a hash product with a better shelf life. Other methods include using solvents like ice water, butane, or ethanol, which strip further levels of plant material.

However, techniques using flammable solvents can expose hash makers to risks such as fires or explosions. When solvents are used to make hash, then great care needs to be taken during the drying phase so that no mold or bacteria contaminates the hash concentrate.

Ice Water Hash

Making hash using the ice-water solvent method is relatively straightforward, safe, and effective. Basically, the goal is to separate the trichomes from the stalks, buds, and leaves. This is accomplished by adding kief or plant material to ice water, which is then agitated so that the trichomes sink to the bottom while the plant material floats to the top. Various screens and filtration bags are used and the entire process typically takes several days, including drying.

Making ice-water hash is doable, but requires a fair amount of mixing, filtering, and complicated freezing techniques. It’s not beyond the casual user, but many may question whether it’s worth all the effort. In most cases, ordinary users will probably want to avoid hash making methods that utilize flammable solvents as they can pose significant risks.

Butane Hash Oil

Butane Hash Oil Extraction

As the name implies, butane hash oil (BHO) is a concentrate that uses butane as a solvent to treat the kief, which can produce an extract that exceeds 80 to 90% THC. Experts suggest that BHO concentrates should be lab tested to ensure that excessive levels of butane aren’t present. Since such standardized testing procedures aren’t yet legally required in California, we strongly recommend staying away from concentrates created using BHO extraction. Instead, rely on the next extraction method to produce the safest products for consumption.

Supercritical CO2 Oil

CO2 Extract

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a gas that converts to a liquid under pressure. As a result, it’s become a standard solvent for many extraction processes, widely used to treat foods, nutritional supplements, and herbal remedies.

Unlike other solvent options, which may leave heavy metals behind, the CO2 process is natural and produces pure concentrates that are low in toxicity. Plus, it extracts the essential oils without damaging them. To extract concentrates CO2 is pumped into a high-pressure vessel containing cannabis. As James Slatic, CEO of MedWest Distribution explains, “When the solvent (CO2) is pushed through the plant matter at such a high pressure, it can separate the matter precisely, which allows us to isolate only the purest essence.”

According to experts (and our personal recommendation for patients interested in using concentrates), the CO2 method is especially recommended for medical marijuana patients who require a highly pure cannabis concentrate with virtually no toxic residues.

Cannabis Oil Extracts

Cannabis oil is a highly effective and popular way of getting the health benefits of medical marijuana. Typically, a few drops of the oil concentrate are dissolved under the tongue (this delivery system is known as being “sublingual”). This delivery method works because the bioavailability of the essential cannabinoid oils is introduced immediately into the circulatory system, allowing you to feel the effects faster and without any potentially harmful side effects that come with combustion (smoking).

Oils can be topically applied to the skin as well, and prove particularly helpful for patients suffering from joint pain (arthritis), and lesions on the skin.

Here’s a brief look at some of the main cannabis oil product types and what to look for:

CBD Oil:

Contains non-psychoactive CBD, which provides many health benefits, but no THC. CBD has gained popularity for helping treat juvenile patients with epilepsy since it can provide the medical benefits associated with cannabinoids without the intoxicating effects of THC. It’s quickly gaining popularity among new and experienced patients as a pain-reliever and mental relaxant.

You won’t feel like you’re in an altered state (although some patients have reported small effects of this type when consuming high doses of CBD), but you’ll certainly feel like you’ve taken the edge off. If you’re a working professional or just someone with daily stress in your life, try weaving a low-dose CBD product into your daily regimen and see if you notice any improvements in your daily function.

Hemp Oil:

Made from hemp, a close cousin of marijuana, it contains some cannabinoids, but not enough to create any of the medical benefits associated with consuming CBD, and contains absolutely no THC. While it has many essential fatty acids that provide nutritional benefits, it doesn’t provide the therapeutic advantages of medical marijuana.

Rick Simpson Oil:

Perhaps the most famous cannabis extract of all is Rick Simpson Oil, named after the marijuana activist who claims to have cured himself along with thousands of others from cancer by using this marijuana concentrate. It’s important to note that Rick doesn’t sell or produce his oil for public consumption; he merely provides the recipe for making it.

RSO is made from the buds and flowers of the female cannabis plant, so the oil will contain THC, CBD, and cannabinoids. Many imitators and competitors have attempted to capitalize on Simpson’s popularity; as a result, there’s a lot of confusion about these extracts in the marketplace.

Buyers need to carefully investigate the oil extracts they’re considering. The marketplace for these products occupies a legal gray area.

Also, a lack of health and safety standards means that shady operators and mislabeled products are common. However, you can infuse olive oil with cannabis by following a simple homemade recipe; or you can check out Rick Simpson’s own method, which he explains on his website.

Rosin

Rosin Extract

Rosin concentrates are increasingly popular in the medical marijuana community. Essentially, rosin refers to a sticky resin that you get from adding pressure and heat to cannabis to create small batches of hash oil. You can quickly and easily make your own rosin at home with a hair straightener (set at the lowest heat setting) and a few other household items.

Ingredients:

  • Flat iron, heat/rosin press or hair straightener (use the lowest heat setting)
  • Non-stick parchment paper
  • Scraper to collect rosin (i.e. a razor blade)

Steps:

  • Fold quality bud inside a 4” x  8” square of non-stick parchment paper.
  • Place the parchment paper with the bud in the jaws of a hair straightener.
  • Apply heat at the lowest setting for 4 to 7 seconds.
  • Remove the bud from the parchment and collect the resin with the scraping tool.

You can see what the process looks like by checking out this short video. For more tips on making rosin, click here.

Rosin Extraction

Conclusion

Cannabis concentrates can offer medical marijuana patients distinct advantages: discreteness, reliable dosing, and quick absorption are just a few of the pluses extracts offer. They’re an ideal option especially for patients who require high doses for instant pain relief. However, extracts can deliver effects that are too potent for some users. As always, it’s important to discuss cannabis concentrate options with a licensed physician.

  • What Are Cannabinoids & How Do They Affect Your Cannabis Use?

Imagine, for minute, that you’re a patient with a life-threatening form of epilepsy. Every day a series of electrical storms originating in your brain render your daily existence a living hell. Anticonvulsant medication, radical diets, and invasive procedures provide marginal relief, but they leave you feeling like a zombie. In the end, no matter what the conventional treatment, the seizures always return.

Incredibly, medical marijuana, the same drug your parents used to smoke before rock concerts, seems to zap your seizures before they zing you. You can thank compounds called cannabinoids for that, but what are they? It seems too good to be true, but respected physicians and accredited researchers agree—cannabis can stop a grand mal seizure in its tracks.

Scientists aren’t exactly sure how pot alleviates convulsions, but they believe one particular cannabinoid, called CBD, helps to calm excessive electrochemical activity, which is responsible for epileptic seizures. Epilepsy is just one condition that pot seems to offer dramatic forms of relief. Muscle spasms, depression, PTSD, and arthritis are distinct conditions, but marijuana can counteract each of them and many others.

What accounts for pot’s seemingly miraculous versatility? More specifically, how can it boost serotonin levels in depressed patients and dampen pain signals in arthritis victims, yet calm the nerves of war vets suffering from PTSD?

The answer lies in the literally hundreds of beneficial compounds found in marijuana. These include THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids that bind to specific receptors in the body. In fact, marijuana is something of an alphabet soup of substances that can address specific deficiencies and imbalances in the body’s neurochemistry. The more you study how cannabis interacts with the body, the more you realize that this plant seems tailor-made to promote homeostasis and wellness.

Let’s take a look at cannabinoids in action and how they can promote optimum health.

    The Endocannabinoid System

Homeostasis is probably the most important concept when it comes to health. In everyday language, it refers to the way the body aims to maintain its balance by regulating itself. To do this, a network of hormonal signaling called the endocannabinoid system regulates bodily processes that involve pain signaling, cellular repair, and the like.

Endocannabinoids are chemical messengers that the human body produces naturally; they bind to receptors in the brain, the nervous system, and cells throughout the body. Essentially, endocannabinoids are like the “keys” that either trigger or “unlock” receptors in the endocannabinoid system.

A quick glance at how this system works can not only help explain how disease arises, but also how medical marijuana can promote health.

Let’s imagine that you stubbed your toe while exercising. Inflammation causes damaged tissue, resulting in pain signals being sent to your brain. Maybe you even let out a curse word under your breath (or perhaps not so subtly); depending on the severity of the injury, you know it’s only a matter of time before you’ve completely forgotten your little mishap.

Ultimately, endocannabinoid signalling is what causes the body to adjust to changing internal or external conditions. As with your stubbed toe, the endocannabinoid signals will instigate a chain reaction of cellular processes aimed at stabilizing the damage and repairing it.

The endocannabinoid system, of course, is far more complex that our simple example suggests.

In fact, it’s instrumental in regulating not just pain signaling, but also psychological mood, immune function, and many other bodily processes central to our health and well-being. So much so that many scientists now believe the impairment of the endocannabinoid system may be the root cause of fibromyalgia, MS, arthritis, depressive disorder, and a host of other diseases.

Cannabinoids Make Marijuana a Wonder Drug?

“Cannabis is the single most versatile herbal remedy, and the most useful plant on Earth. No other single plant contains as wide a range of medically active herbal constituents.”

    –Dr. Ethan Russo

Medical marijuana is loaded with literally hundreds of compounds called phytocannabinoids, which is just a fancy way of saying cannabinoids derived from a plant source. Essentially, the cannabinoids in marijuana either mimic or counteract the endocannabinoids our body naturally produces.

As mentioned, some researchers have proposed that impairments or defects in the body’s endocannabinoid system may be responsible for many common illnesses. They’ve labeled this proposed spectrum disorder Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CECD).

Unfortunately, federal restriction on cannabis research has greatly hampered the studies that would shed light on this topic. Nevertheless, anecdotal reports and many clinical studies indicate that numerous health conditions respond well to cannabinoid-based medicines.

    Cannabinoid System

Presently, scientists believe there are three main types of cannabinoid receptors in the body:

    • CB1-R: These are the receptors that THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, bind to. Health experts believe that when THC binds to the CB1-R receptors the result is a dampening of neuropathic pain, muscle spasticity, nausea, and seizures.

    • CB2-R: These are the receptors that other cannabinoids, like CBD, bind to; they’re thought to govern immune function and anti-inflammatory response. Emerging evidence suggests that cannabinoids in marijuana work via these receptors to counteract inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

    • TRPV1: These receptors are involved in the detection and regulation of temperature. Less is known about this type, but researchers believe cannabinoids targeting these receptors may dampen neuropathic pain signaling.

Research on medical marijuana and its impact on the body’s endocannabinoid system is still in its infancy. However, the clinical studies conducted so far suggest that cannabis-based therapies hold tremendous promise for treating conditions that stem from deficiencies in the body’s endocannabinoid system.

Dr. Dustin Sulak, an osteopathic physician, explains why cannabis works so well with our body’s endocannabinoid system:

“Research has shown that small doses of cannabinoids from cannabis can signal the body to make more endocannabinoids and build more cannabinoid receptors. This is why many first-time cannabis users don’t feel an effect, but by their second or third time using the herb they have built more cannabinoid receptors and are ready to respond. More receptors increase a person’s sensitivity to cannabinoids; smaller doses have larger effects, and the individual has an enhanced baseline of endocannabinoid activity. I believe that small, regular doses of cannabis might act as a tonic to our most central physiologic healing system.”

    Marijuana’s Versatility as Medicine

Recently, a landmark report conducted by the National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine concluded that marijuana is undeniably effective in treating pain, nausea, and muscle spasticity.

The authors of the study urgently called for lawmakers to lift federal restrictions that prevent large-scale clinical studies from investigating marijuana’s potential as medicine.

The potential health benefits of cannabinoids in marijuanaspecifically their ability to remedy deficiencies in the body’s endocannabinoid systemare too promising to ignore. Indeed, investigators have identified a range of individual cannabinoids and the conditions they’re very helpful in treating.

Here’s a list of some of the better known cannabinoids:

    Cannabinoid

    • CBD: A powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor agent.
    • THC: Known to help reduce pain, nausea, and seizures.
    • THCA: A highly effective anti-spasmodic.
    • CBDA: Known for its antimicrobial benefits.
    • CBC: Thought to have neurogenic and antidepressant effects.
    • CBDV: Has shown promise in the treatment of epilepsy.
    • THCV: Believed to help reduce anxiety and panic attacks.
    • CBG: Evidence suggests it can promote bone growth and inhibit cancer cells.
    • CBN: Is believed to promote a sedative effect.

Individual cannabinoids hold great promise in helping researchers develop targeted therapies, though many experts believe whole-plant therapies may represent the best approach since individual cannabinoids seem to have a synergistic effect on one another. Essentially, they’re more effective collectively than isolated.

Scientists call this phenomena the “entourage effect,” referring to the fact that the whole plant is more than the just the sum of its parts.

In all probability, the future of medical marijuana will entail specific strains that contain the appropriate ratio (or combination) of cannabinoids suited to particular endocannabinoid deficiencies.

    Cannabinoid Facts

    • There are at least 60 molecules in marijuana classified as cannabinoids.
    • THC has a neuroprotective effect and may promote the growth of new neurons.
    • THC in mainly responsible for weed’s psychoactive properties, but CBN and CBDL also have mind-altering effects.
    • CBD is not psychoactive, but it’s attracting great interest among the medical community for its health benefits.
    • CBD reduces the intoxicating effects of THC.
    • CBD and THC interact with the body through different neural pathways, but they have many similar medical benefits.

    Conclusion

There’s an amazing correspondence between the phytocannabinoids in marijuana and the body’s endocannabinoid system. The notion that compounds in cannabis can alleviate epileptic seizures, dampen pain signals, stimulate appetite, improve creativity, lessen anxiety, and boost mood is truly amazing when you think about it.

The body’s endocannabinoid system is so central to our well-being and medical marijuana is so exceptionally abundant in compounds that appear to both modulate and remedy its function.

For years, aspirinwhich is made from willow barkhas been hailed as a “wonder drug.” But given medical marijuana’s unmatched versatility and effectiveness, it may deserve that term even more. Perhaps “miracle drug” is more like it.

  • Weed Grinders: Which One’s Best for Me?

Whether you’re smoking, vaping or baking, preparing your weed ahead of time is important to enjoy the full medicinal and recreational benefits of marijuana.

The process of grinding your ganja can be fast and easy, but finding the right grinder can be time consuming and overwhelming since there are a lot of options to choose from. Some are cheaper and more basic, while others are more expensive and somewhat complex.

So, how do you choose the grinder that’s right for you?

Throughout this article we’ll examine everything you need to know when it comes to grinding your grass: how grinders work, the benefits of using them, how to use them, and some of the best ones on the market so you can make an informed decision and buy the one that best meets your needs!

  •

    Grinder Basics

A finer and more powderized pot delivers a more potent high. Stems and seeds are a useless filler that contain far less THC and could be harmful to your health, so trash them if you find them (unless you want to grow).

Grinding marijuana creates a more workable and efficient form, resulting in smoother, tastier, and more satisfying smoking, vaping or edible experience.

Most popular grinders are built with chambers to separate the potent, tiny trichomes from the flowers. When collected the residue is called kief, a condensed and stronger version of the plants’ beneficial compounds (namely THC). Kief (pictured below) can be added to joints, blunts, bongs, vapes, smoked by itself or used to make cannabutter,  tinctures, oils, and cannabutter.

A similar principle applies to edibles, as treats made with finely ground pot taste better, and the cannabinoids and psychoactive ingredients are more readily absorbed by the body.

    Origins of the Cannabis Grinder

In 1905 an industrial device known as the centerless grinder was introduced, creating a more efficient way of pulverizing material. Essentially, it uses wheels with abrasive teeth-like edges to grind plant-based substances.

Since then, the technology has been adapted and improved by the grinder to include special screens and multiple collection chambers, though it still utilizes the same basic principle.

You can also break up your bud manually using a variety of household utensils (knives, coffee grinders, cheese graters) to more finely powderize your pot, but a lot of the beneficial resin can get lost. Just handling marijuana will leave a lot of the precious THC resin on your fingers, while weed grinders preserve the maximum amount of resin in a powerful, powdery concentrate.

    Grinder Benefits

    Ground Weed Burns Better

Finely-ground weed burns better than non-pulverized pot because more surface area is exposed to the flame, allowing your pipe, joint or bong hit to burn more quickly and evenly. As result, there’s less chance of your pipe or bong clogging.

    Powderized Pot Makes Tastier Edibles

Cannabis can be a healthy addition to a variety of edible recipes, but the herb isn’t known for its flavor-enhancing qualities as much as its health and mind-altering benefits.

Adding ground flowers and/or kief to edible recipes minimizes the distinct marijuana taste, which most people rather not have. Also, finely ground weed allows the THC, cannabinoids, and terpenes to be more easily absorbed by whatever, butter, oil, or extract medium you are cooking with.

    More Potent Cannabis

Breaking down your resin-rich bud extracts and conserves all of its psychoactive compounds into different chambers, meaning each grounded gram will deliver the most pot purity.

Greater Bang for Your Bong Hit

Each joint, bowl or bong hit packed with broken down flowers and/or kief is loaded with beneficial marijuana compounds (THC, cannabinoids, terpenes, and other active ingredients) that could otherwise be wasted if trying to burn the whole bud at once. So you’re getting the maximum medicinal and mind-altering benefits in every puff!

    Healthier Ingesting Method

Because ground pot is “purified” in a sense, you don’t need to ingest as much of it to reap the benefits. Actually, you can smoke less and achieve better effects.

How to Use a Cannabis Grinder

Pot grinders are relatively simple devices and, and with a little practice, can be easy to use. Of course, different brands and models offer a variation of different features. Regardless of their complexity, this step-by-step guide will teach you the basic principles of how to use yours.

The most popular weed grinders consists of 4 pieces and 3 chambers:

    1. Cap (with magnetized center, which helps lock it in place when closed)
    2. Grinding chamber (where you place your weed)
    3. Top chamber (collects the ground cannabis)
    4. Bottom kief catcher (a screen that collects the fine, concentrated trichomes)

    Step One

Remove the top cap. Break up your bud into smaller pieces and distribute them evenly in the grinding chamber, but avoid the magnetized center so your herb grinder will close properly. Be careful not to overfill the chamber. You’ll get better results by adding small batches at a time.

    Step Two

Place the cap on the grinder then turn it side to side several times, breaking up the bud. Initially you should feel some resistance, but after several twists and turns the resistance should gradually lessen as the weed is broken up and pulverized. You’ll know you’re done when you can turn the cap without any difficulty.

    Step Three

Remove the cap and the grinding chamber. Add a coin on top of any part in the upper chamber and gently shake the grinder from side to side. The weight of the coin and the gentle shaking motion will help push the kief powder down through the screen and into the lowest chamber, while still leaving your ground up buds in the top chamber.

    Step Four

Remove the grinding chamber so you can access your weed that’s now been collected in the lower chamber; after extracting your ground-up bud, remove that top chamber to get access to your kief-catching chamber and save it or combine it with your ground weed.

    Types of Cannabis Grinders

Dry herb grinders come in a variety of types and are made from different materials. As a general rule, most cannabis connoisseurs believe that you get what you pay for when it comes to herb grinders. Typically, inexpensive grinders range from $5 to about $20, while higher-end grinders tend to go for $30 to $90.

    What are grinders made from?

Grinders can be produced from a number of materials including plastic, wood, aluminum, steel and titanium.

Generally speaking, plastic grinders are the cheapest, but can easily break, and who wants to inhale fumes from a broken grinding tooth in their stash? They’re also much more prone to leaving resin in the chamber, and typically don’t grind your buds as fine as you’d like them for optimal consumption.

In contrast, titanium grinders are the most expensive but also the most durable. Aluminum grinders offer a good balance between cost and durability.

Two piece grinders offer simplicity, affordability, and maximum portability. But four-piece grinders deliver the best results. There are also electric and hand crank grinders for those who want a more interactive and entertaining experience. Whichever works best for you depends on your budget and your expectations.

“The best grinder, hands down. I bought a small Space Case back in college and paid a ton for it, but it’s lasted me nearly 20 years…this thing is perfect. It grinds and grinds and grinds, fits well in your hand, and is everything a grinder should be.” —Ed D.

SLX Herb Grinders: The SLX 2.0 grinder is made with the absolute highest grade of aircraft aluminum and a nano-ceramic coating, reducing friction and resin buildup so you get a great grind every time. List Price: $60

“This Grinder is perfect for getting a fine grind on all of your herbs. The non-stick advertisement is definitely true, I’ve been using it for more than a month and there’s no evidence in the upper grind chamber. The lift-out collection chamber works great, you don’t lose the powder in the ridges on the side anymore.” —Emily C.

  • What Does the Congressional Cannabis Caucus Mean for Weed?

To date, 44 states and territories, including D.C., Guam and Puerto Rico, have passed laws allowing the use of medical marijuana in one form or another. Our President promised during his campaign trail that he would respect state’s rights concerning this issue and leave enforcement in the hands of local governments.

Yet the industry is now growing more and more concerned over recent comments from Trump’s new pick for Attorney General, Jeff Sessions. Will Trump keep his promises? Does the administration even have the power to stop the full-speed legalization train even if they wanted to? What can the Congressional Cannabis Caucus do to secure a better future for cannabis?

  •

    Could We Really Move Backwards?

    jeff sessions repeals mmj

Yes, those who live in legal cannabis states are wondering how safe their investments are. And it’s a fair concern. After all, much of the conversation from GOP stalwarts surrounding legalization is focused on the old knee-jerk arguments from the Reagan Era drug war, statements that have now been proven shockingly false.

For instance, Sessions released a statement just over a week ago saying, “I reject the idea that America will be a better place if marijuana is sold in every corner store. And I am astonished to hear people suggest that we can solve our heroin crisis by legalizing marijuana–so people can trade one life-wrecking dependency for another that’s only slightly less awful. Our nation needs to say clearly once again that using drugs will destroy your life.”

More than 33,000 people died from prescription opioids and illegal heroin in 2015. Roughly half of these deaths were from doctor prescribed medicine.

Yet in the states that have recently legalized medical marijuana use, those deaths have already been reduced by 25 percent.

The lack of scientific and epidemiological understanding in our nation’s leaders is staggering. But how many times can cannabis advocates keep saying that marijuana has never killed a single person and has saved quite a few lives? Till they’re blue in the face? What can you do in the face of such a colossal lack of logical thinking and basic understanding?

    The Economic Discussion

According to a recent report from Arcview, legal cannabis sales neared $7 billion in 2014. That’s a whole lot of economy.

Thousands of people have put their life savings into starting new businesses and creating jobs while working with cooperative administrations that realize regulation works best. Some of these companies employ hundreds of people and pay taxes, fees and licenses. In Colorado, for fiscal year 2017 alone, this tax, fee and license income totaled $144,820,374; incidentally a $47 million increase from the year before.

So, the better question might be, how would the Trump administration convince states that are seeing the economic and health benefits of legalization (tax revenue, higher employment, law enforcement savings) to give them up?

It might be safe to assume that the federal government doesn’t have a chance in hell of convincing any legal state to accept the negative rhetoric any more. But four members of Congress aren’t taking any chances.

    Meet the Congressional Cannabis Caucus

    Congressional Cannabis Caucus

Pot rights powerhouses Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R) and Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D) have established a new Congressional Cannabis Caucus to fight for more sensible drug laws from the start of the Trump administration. The two other founding members are Rep. Don Young (R) and Rep. Jared Polis (D).

Polis summed up the reasoning behind their decision to form this caucus, saying:

I think, all four of us, we don’t want to be in a place where we are relying on the goodwill of which side of the bed any attorney general wakes up on in any given day. That’s why we’re pursuing statutory changes.

Respect State Marijuana Laws: Third Time’s a Charm?

Rep. Rohrabacher is hoping that the third time’s a charm with his landmark Respect State Marijuana Laws Act.

This bill, currently listed under H.R. 975, is short, sweet and to the point. It’s a one sentence amendment to Part G Sec. 710 of the Controlled Substances Act, which reads:

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the provisions of this subchapter related to marijuana shall not apply to any person acting in compliance with State laws relating to the production, possession, distribution, dispensation, administration, or delivery of marihuana.

That’s it. The entire bill in its current form. But this tiny paragraph could literally change drug law in the nation forever and prevent Sessions from moving against the legal states.

When introducing H.R. 975 to congress in January, Rep. Rohrabacher said:

It’s a travesty that we don’t know what marijuana can be positively used for or what the negative impact is because we haven’t done the research. That is a travesty. It’s a travesty when our veterans come home and they’re given opiates…and our veterans end up killing themselves because now they’re addicted to an opiate.

Unfortunately so far, it’s only been referred to committee by default, the graveyard where 96% of all bills go to die. Currently the bill has 8 Democrat and 8 Republican cosponsors, but cosponsors aren’t necessarily a predictor of success. Bipartisan cosponsors, on the other hand, are a very good sign. Also, so is buzz in the media.

One of the biggest buzz points for this bill is that it makes banking for cannabis businesses possible, thus enabling the 46 additional billion dollars in black market sales to safely enter the legal tax revenue stream.

This is becoming a very tempting point for many lawmakers, even though this same bill has failed to move forward twice before. But Members of Congress need encouragement from constituents to sponsor pro-cannabis bills considering the opposition they face from establishment members—people they deal with on a daily basis.

    The McClintock-Polis Amendment

Meanwhile, Rep. Polis and Rep. McClintock are planning to prevent Sessions from initiating recently-threatened raids and prosecutions by reintroducing the McClintock-Polis Amendment. Meant to become a rider attached to the new federal budget, it can get past a hurdle that most other bills fail to navigate because it’s simply added to a bill that has to pass.

The amendment does much of the same as the successful Rohrabacher-Farr Amendmentas it prevents the federal government from enforcing federal marijuana laws in states that approve the use of marijuana.

But the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment merely prevents the federal government from spending money on marijuana enforcement in legal states, while the McClintock-Polis Amendment differs by preventing the federal government from arresting and prosecuting people for use, possession or sale of marijuana where it’s legal.

The McClintock-Polis Amendment failed to pass in 2015, even though the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment did in 2014, and has been renewed each year since then (both must pass every year to remain in effect).

This may be partly due to the fact that Congress felt comfortable passing a budget-saving amendment that prevents the federal government from wasting money but doesn’t tie federal prosecutors’ hands. However, the amendment may stand more of a chance moving forward in the current political environment with constituent encouragement.

Does This Uncertainty Mean Cannabusiness Investments Are a No-Go for Now?

    cannabis investment

Not necessarily. Sessions would still have to explain his reasoning for prioritizing expensive prosecutions against cannabusiness in legal states when the federal government is already dealing with budget problems. Even Sessions had to admit, “It’s not possible for the federal government, of course, to take over everything the local police used to do in a state that’s legalized it.”

True, it’s possible that the industry is overreacting to Sessions’ hostility toward cannabis. One must admit, it’s very difficult to enforce a law that most people think is wrong. After all, how would you find a jury willing to convict? How do you enforce it in a state where local police are forced by law not to cooperate with federal authorities during raids?

This isn’t to say that Sessions wouldn’t go after some low hanging fruit by encouraging other agencies like the IRS or FDA to go after quasi-regulated cannabis activities. It’s also been theorized that he may order state attorneys generals to crack down, but would they cooperate?

Furthermore, the Cole Memo is still in place. The memo was written in 2013 by then Deputy Attorney General, James Cole, which prioritized prosecution of marijuana offenses around 8 points, focusing mainly on public health and safety concerns. It also acknowledged that prosecution of medical marijuana in states where it’s legal shouldn’t be a priority if it’s not interfering with these 8 public safety considerations.

Unfortunately, it’s an ambiguous enough document that if Sessions were to carry through with his comment that he “may have some different ideas [himself] in addition to that,” he certainly has the power to act.

    So What Can You Do?

Industry experts, activists and patients agree that this is a very dangerous time to rest one one’s laurels and become lax with activism. After all, any perception of flagging support from the populous could give misguided leaders the opportunity they think they need to restart the drug war.

So, it’s recommended that you, all medical marijuana patients and supporters, take a couple minutes a week to use the messages in the links below to inform your U.S. Congressional and Senate representatives of their support. It’s easy and only takes a couple of clicks.

Any congress member can join the Congressional Cannabis Caucus; the more members it has, the more power it gains to pass legislation. Wide support from a large congressional caucus with many members can change the 96% possibility that a bill will fail into a near certainty that it will pass.

  • We’ve Expanded NuggMD Telemedicine Evaluations to New York!

New York, NY:  On April 18, NuggMD, the California-based leading telemedicine portal that connects qualified medical marijuana patients with licensed physicians online, extends their services across New York. They are the first company to put forth a bold effort to combat the policies that currently severely restrict access to medical cannabis, despite it being legal in the state.

  • What you'll learn in this post:

[Click any of the section titles below to jump there]

    Medical Cannabis in New York

In 2016, NuggMD assisted more than 40,000 California patients to obtain an online medical marijuana consultation with a licensed physician and with their launch, the company is excited to enable participating New York physicians to provide convenient and efficient care to patients statewide.

In March 2015, New York passed the New York Telehealth Amendment Act (Senate Bill 2405), allowing doctors and nursing practitioners in the state to provide medical care and issue medical marijuana certifications 100% online using telehealth/telemedicine technology. With this, New York became one of the five states that does not require an in-person physical examination, to establish a bona fide patient-physician relationship.

However, unlike in California, doctors in New York are required to register for the NYS Medical Marijuana Program and obtain a special certification in order to prescribe medical marijuana making access to care extremely limited. Out of 110,000 practitioners in New York, only 884 are registered for the NYS Medical Marijuana Program.

“Although New York approved medical marijuana in 2014; barely 14,000 people legally have access to it because of restrictions on the visibility and number of doctors. This is a trend we’ve seen across the board in states with new marijuana laws on the books. Access should be feasible, but it’s not, and we’re going to change that; our network of cannabis-expert doctors will accelerate that change better than anyone else,” says Collin Mann, CEO at NuggMD.

To make matters worse, the state Health Department refuses to release certified marijuana doctors’ names, keeping the potentially life-saving medicine out of reach for many who need it. Many patients find themselves 100 miles away from the nearest certified doctor, making it impossible to get the treatment they need.

“It’s frustrating that we can’t find a practitioner, especially while knowing that children in different states have full access to this medicine” stated Dr. Amy Piperato, a doctor in NY whose daughter has epilepsy (video). This is why NuggMD has come to change the situation by extending its services to New York State.

Qualifying Conditions for Cannabis in New York

In NYS, several ailments qualify for Medical Marijuana; these include cancer, HIV infection or AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord with objective neurological indication of intractable spasticity, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, neuropathies, and Huntington’s disease.

On December 1, 2016, the NYS Health Commissioner; Dr. Howard A. Zucker; announced that chronic pain will be added among the other qualifying conditions for medical marijuana, and now it HAS been added as of March, 2017. Finally, a sign that New York is finally on its way to granting true access to medical cannabis for patients who need it.

  • Cheeba Chews Review: Quad Dose, Deca Dose & CBD

It’s hard to produce an edible that stands out in an industry saturated with seemingly every kind of cannabis infused food imaginable. But Cheeba Chews has gained attention for being one of the first dedicated brands to make groundbreaking, potent and tested marijuana edibles.

Cheeba Chews started in 2009 in Boulder, Colorado by James Howler, who noticed major discrepancies between edibles that claimed to have the same strength and effects. So he created the company as a way to standardize edible lab testing and to develop a new, more discreet and portable edible than the pot brownie that was practically synonymous with edibles at the time.

After eight years, Cheeba Chews are now available at over 800 dispensaries across Colorado and California. However, in today’s more competitive market, Cheeba Chews’ major selling points don’t stand out as much as they used to. So how do their products hold up? We’ll tell you everything you want to know about these delightful chewy gummy edibles.

  •

    What Are Cheeba Chews?

    Cheeba Chews Recipe

Cheeba Chews are bite-sized, soft, rectangular taffiesbasically a cannabis infused Tootsie Roll with distinct strengths, and now multiple flavors. In addition to cannabis oil they’re made with simple ingredients like soybean oil, corn syrup, milk, cocoa and sugar. They’re even nut and gluten-free.

Staying true to their original mission of standardizing lab testing for edibles, each chewy batch is made with pharmaceutical grade cannabis extract, which is tested on a monthly basis to maintain the correct THC, CBD and CBN content and ensure quality and consistency.

    Types of Cheeba Chews

Cheeba Chews’ core line of medical cannabis edibles includes combinations of sativa, indica, and hybrid THC and/or CBD candies. If you’ve tried these bad boys before, you know they’re seemingly small but pack a big punch.  If you haven’t tried before, understand that a formidable high is coming your way and should be approached with caution.

We recommend eating half first then waiting at least an hour before eating the other half, as is good practice with any new cannabis product you try. After all, we don’t yet have industry-wide standards for dose regulation, so it’s best to assume that something will have a stronger effect than you think.

Remember—you can always eat more, but you can’t eat less. Wise words to live by my friends.

    The Quad Dose

    Cheeba Chews Price

Cheeba Chew’s flagship product, the “Quad Dose,” contains 70mg of THC. If you’re generally unaccustomed to medical marijuana, a single portion will have a noticeable effect so start with a quarter (about 20mg); but if you’re a seasoned smoker or edible consumer the entire taffy should be the correct amount to feel its full effects.

If you don’t like chocolate, there’s also the fruity gummy “Green Hornet” from Cheeba Chew that contains the same dosage, but with apple and fruit punch flavors. Yum!

    Cheeba Chews Green Hornet

You’ll find quad doses available in the following forms:

    • 70mg THC Taffy (Indica dominant)
    • 70mg THC Taffy (Sativa dominant)
    • 70mg THC Taffy (Hybrid)
    • 70mg THC Green Hornet Gummy 2-pack (Indica dominant)
    • 70mg THC Green Hornet Gummy 2-pack (Sativa dominant)

    Deca Dose

    Cheeba Chews Deca Dose

Alternatively, the stronger “Deca Dose” Cheeba Chew has over 100 more mgs of THC, 175mg in all, and is recommended for anyone with a higher cannabis tolerance and/or for anyone with severe, chronic pain; if you do, only start with a quarter (about 44mg THC).

The slightly weaker caramel sativa edible contains 100mg of THC. While only 25mg stronger than the quad chews, these still pack a punch and should be rationed into four, equal 25mg doses or into two doses (50mg) if you’re more cannabis experienced.

Hell, if you’re a cannabis connoisseur, feel free to ignore our recommendations on dose. You know your limits, abide by them wisely, or see you on planet Zorborg (it’s one of our favorite vacation spots).

    Cheeba Chew Caramel Chew Hybrid

You’ll find Deca dosages in the following strengths:

    • 175mg THC Deca Dose Taffy
    • 100mg THC Caramel Taffy (Indica dominant, Colorado only)
    • 100mg THC Caramel Taffy (Sativa dominant, Colorado only)
    • 100mg THC Caramel Taffy (Hybrid, California only)

    CBD Chews

    Cheeba Chews CBD

CBD Cheeba Chews are recommended if you’re looking for a purely medicinal experience, without any psycho-activity. We’re talking pain relief, anti-inflammation, mood enhancement—all without your traditional “high.”

Thanks to two different versions—one containing about twice as much THC as CBD, the other containing almost pure CBD—you can choose between a medicinal high or medicinal effects.

In each case, CBD chews will help relieve back pain, insomnia, headaches, and other ailments cannabis commonly cures. Always thinking of the consumer & your different taste preferences, Cheeba Chews also makes a Green Hornet CBD gummy.

    Buy Cheeba Chews Online

Unlike other Cheeba Chew medicinal products, CBD are only available in three types:

    • High CBD 20mg:50mg (CBD:THC) Taffy
    • Pure CBD 50mg:2mg (CBD:THC) Taffy (Non-psychoactive)
    • Green Hornet 50mg CBD Gummy 2-pack (Non-psychoactive)

How Much Cheeba Should You Chew?

Though each of these products may look and sound similar, their informative packaging clearly notes the difference in their contents, and their different colors make choosing the right candy simple and straightforward.

Still, even experienced cannabis users may find themselves taken aback by their strength, so being the responsible cannabis aficionados we are, we have to advise starting with a single dose, or a quarter (¼) of the whatever chew meets your tolerance and medical needs. If uncertain, just follow these dosage guidelines:

    • Single Dose (17.5mg THC) = 1-2 bowl hits
    • Double Dose (35mg THC) = 3-4 bowl hits
    • Quad Dose (70mg THC) = Joint to yourself
    • Deca Dose (175mg THC) = High Tolerance Patients Only (the black diamond of chews)

    How to Make Your Own

Is the Cheeba Chew price putting a dent in your wallet? Rather make your own? Just follow this simple Cheeba Chews recipe and enjoy a batch of medicated treats in no time!

    Ingredients:

    • 1 bag of Tootsie-Roll Minis
    • 10 grams of hash oil
    • 1 tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk
    • Butter or cooking spray (butter preferred)
    • 1 (8” x 8”) Pyrex baking pan

    Instructions:

    1. Put Tootsies into a stovetop pot and melt them on low heat, constantly stirring to ensure a smooth consistency and prevent burning.
    2. When melted, add the hash oil and condensed milk then stir for 2 minutes; the oil and milk must be completely mixed in so the candy can correctly set.
    3. Coat the pan evenly with the butter or spray then carefully pour the hot mixture into the pan.
    4. Put the pan in the fridge, letting it cool for at least 2 hours.
    5. Once cooled and hardened, remove the candy from the pan and cut into small pieces (size varies depending on your cannabis tolerance).

    Pros & Cons

    Pros

The biggest edge Cheeba Chews have over other edible products is their portability and effectiveness. For a product with a relatively high potency, it’s easier to carry (like up to 20) in your pocket or purse than most of its competitors’ THC treats, taking up about the same amount of space as an actual Tootise Roll would. Plus, it won’t melt as much as a regular chocolate bar, since these things are straight taffy.

And, fortunately, Cheeba Chews makes good on their promise of using lab testing to ensure consistent dosing in every chocolaty chew. No matter which strengths and dosages are right for you, rest assured that the same dose will produce the same effects every time.

If you’re a first-time patient (and have been paying attention to our incessant need to recommend appropriate dose amounts), please understand how valuable it is that Cheeba maintains consistent dosing in all their products. This is RARE in the world of cannabis, even for the best brands.

    Cons

For all the ways they’ve helped shape and legitimize medical-grade edibles, Cheeba Chews (not Green Hornet) could stand to improve their flavor and texture. A pungent cannabis taste, which can be off-putting to many, especially newbies, accompanies an otherwise typical chocolate taffy flavor. But hey, that’s what you get with such a small, portable product, and we’re happy they don’t stuff each chew with mounds of sugar.

Keep in mind, taste is rather subjective, and we’ve known plenty of patients who actually enjoy the taste of Cheeba Chews.

They could also improve the candy’s purity, which at times contains grainy solids that can make for an unpleasant chewing experience. That’s not to say the dose isn’t accurate, it’s just the texture in your mouth that might vary from chew to chew.

Fortunately, lack of flavor & the occasional inconsistent texture is really the only obstacle that holds back these otherwise incredible little products. And we’re just being nit-picky here — trust us, you’ll love these things.

Since Cheeba Chews debuted eight years ago, many advances have been made in the world of edibles, to the point that some are quality food products in their own right, enjoyable because of and not in spite of their medicinal component.

    First Hand Cheeba Chew Experiences

“I give this product credit for being very potent for the size. It is a chewy consistency and pretty sweet. Doesn’t take much to do the job.” —Justine

“These [Pure CBD Cheeba Chews] are easy to eat and help with my migraines and overall anxiety…I prefer using this medicinal marijuana over any painkillers I get prescribed. I didn’t feel any significant psychoactive reaction at all either, I was able to drive after eating it.” —Caitlin

“These little tasty Cheebas may be small but let me just tell you…they are strong! They have been awesome for me especially with my high tolerance!!” —Shelby

“Super positive post. My husband has seizures and felt one coming one. He ate half of your pure cbd and the seizure went away. He said he never felt high just very alert. Thank you for saving the day.” Presence

“Another really great product from Cheeba Chews, I’ve tried almost all of them and I tried this with my aunt, who really benefits from CBD products because she doesn’t like the psychoactive effects of cannabis. Really great price for how long it lasts you.” —Wesley

    Final Verdict

    Effectiveness: 5/5

Cheeba Chews do their job exactly as advertised, and thanks to rigorous lab testing, they’ll work the same way every time.

    Strength: 5/5

From a beginner’s dose of 17.5mg of THC to an entire quad dose of 175mg of THC, Cheeba Chews leaves choosing one of their several strengths entirely up to you.

    Taste: 2.5/5

They’re edible, but for most, the taste won’t impress, so you’ll just have to get it down. To some this is probably inconsequential considering their size and strength, while to others it may be a deal breaker.

    Cost: 4/5

There are of course certain brands that offer similar potency for less, but those edibles may not have a leg up on Cheeba Chews’ rigorous lab testing and portability. You’re paying for quality here, people.

Though they’ve helped pave the way for many of the quality edibles we now take for granted, Cheeba Chews have now become something of a niche product. Thanks to their wide availability, people in areas with more limited dispensary options may find Cheeba Chews prices and potencies to be their best bet, probably why they were named “America’s Favorite Edible.”

    Nugg Rating: 4.5

Because of their insistence on constant lab testing, quality is guaranteed in a way few which few other brands are able to match. But an unappealing taste and middling price will mean that competing products may be a better option if you have more available choices. Regardless of their flaws, these small edibles get the job done (and then some), and we’d highly recommend them.

TetraLabs started in 2008 as a research project dedicated to creating purified cannabis extracts through natural processes. Over time, the experiment grew to form a thriving collective as patients continually requested more and more of their PureGold cannabis oil.

The TetraLabs team strives for purity in their products, and they’ve achieved it by creating one of the cleanest, most effective marijuana oil available. The resulting liquid cannabis extract is featured in a variety of distinct products that can be used for dabbing, vaping, refilling vape pens, and even cooking, satisfying everyone’s needs.

Unlike some vape extracts, it doesn’t contain any additives or impurities like polyethylene or propylene glycol (which could have some harsh unwanted side effects if you’re vaporizing it), making PureGold oil an ideal choice for medical marijuana patients seeking a strong, safe, ingestible product.

    How Is PureGold Oil Made?

    How Is PureGold Oil Made

TetraLabs PureGold oil used in all products is derived from dried and screened sun-grown cannabis leaves that, unlike hemp leaves, yield a concentrate rich in THC and CBD, as hemp contains such small amounts of cannabinoids that using them medicinally or recreationally isn’t beneficial.

A natural solvent like oil or grain alcohol is used to extract the cannabinoids along with 450-600 unwanted compounds from the plant material, finally reducing it into a pure, gold hash oil.

Hash oil usually contains about 50% cannabinoids and 50% unwanted compounds like tar, sugars, and waxes that can make it smell and taste unappealing after use. PureGold, on the other hand, is different, containing 95% pure cannabinoids and 5% therapeutic sesquiterpenes derived compounds.

The oil is then rigorously lab tested for quality control. By singling out the contaminants, impurities are removed one-by-one via heat, pressure, and centrifugation until only pure cannabis, sesquiterpenes and pigments remain. The entire process takes about forty steps and around three weeks to complete. Nothing added. Only extracted.

Of course, we mostly have to take the company at their word for this (like any other concentrate manufacturer based in California), since no regulatory framework exists yet for ensuring quality control and consistency of products.

But, once you get a taste of PureGold for yourself, there will be little doubt in your mind that this company is dedicated to producing one of the finest cannabis oils available today.

    How to Use PureGold

Depending on how you decide to medicate, PureGold oil can be used in different ways. It can be squeezed from the capsule onto the top of bud in a pipe or bong bowl, or inside of a blunt or joint. It can also be dabbed, vaped, and eaten.

This product as versatile AF, to say the least.

Usually 2-3 drops or puffs from a vape should create a high that lasts 1-2 hours, but the amount you take depends on your medical condition being treated, your tolerance to the oil, and how you consume it.

If dabbed, the effects can be more intense than just vaporizing. If you choose to drop this stuff on your flowers though, expect less of a result as it’s not being heated to the proper temperature that produces maximum effect.

    Available in Several Forms

As we alluded to in the last section, this versatile pure, gold oil comes in gel capsule, squeeze tube, pure THC liquid, and cartridge forms. Each PureGold product has its own potency and beneficial cannabinoids like THC & CBD. Below you’ll find a basic overview of each concentrated oil product.

    Vape Pen & Cartridges

    TetraLabs Vape Pen

GoldPen with 0.75g GoldCart THC ($110): if you’re a new patient also in need of a portable vape pen then this package is perfect for you; it’s healthy, effective, and ready to use right out of the box! Designed to fit easily in your pocket or purse.

    TetraLabs Gold Carts

GoldCart THC ($40-70): these preloaded THC vape cartridges consist of 75% PureGold cannabinoid oil and 25% fruit extract to create tasty flavors like pineapple, spearmint, crème brûlée, earl grey, and classic (no added flavoring). Just recently the company released four new strain specific carts: Girl Scout Cookies, Gorilla Glue, Strawberry Cough, and Super Lemon Haze. All nine are available in 0.5g (250mg THC) and 1.0g (500mg THC) strengths.

    TetraLabs CBD Gold Cart

GoldCart CBD ($50-70): this pure, 0.5g CBD cartridge contains no THC and is non-psychoactive; it also contains a total of 100mg of CBD and lasts about 100-250 puffs.

For those of you not familiar with CBD-only products, all you have to know is that you won’t get the typical “high” you associate with other cannabis products. Instead, you’ll get the pain-relief, calming, mood-enhancing, and anti-inflammatory effects such that you might notice a slight change in your headspace, but rest assured, you won’t find your mind on Planet Zorbog any time soon.

These cartridges are compatible with the majority of pens that use universal 510 threading

    Squeeze Tubes

    PureGold Squeeze Tubes

PureGold THC ($40): this 0.5g squeezable concentrate comes in a cannabis tube and contains a stronger THC extract that can be used for dabbing or refilling vape pens. It’s available in PureGold Classic, a milder, lighter amber extract (400mg of THC), and PureGold Plus, a more complex, darker oil (500mg of THC) with terpenes added back to deliver a rich and robust taste.

The oil is packaged in a  gel capsule that can be easily be opened by cutting off the top nozzle and dripped into a vaporizer or directly onto marijuana. The capsules come in small quantities can easily be stored for later use.

Can you just swallow these gel capsules whole? Probably, but that presents a dangerous situation for dosing, and could most certainly put you on Planet Zorbog with you least expecting it.

    Capsules

    TetraLabs PureGold THC Capsules

GoldCaps THC ($35-60): a blend of cannabis and grape seed oil (very healthy, as your vegan friends will tell you) that contains cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBC and CBG). Bottles are sold in precise dosages of 10mg, 25mg, 35mg, and 50mg of THC per easy-to-swallow capsule. If that’s not convenience at its finest, comment on this article and point us in the direction of a product you know to be easier to dose and apply. You won’t find one!

    TetraLabs PureGold CBD Capsules

GoldCaps CBD ($35-45): available in ultra-pure CBD and equal CBD:THC strengths, these softgels come in dosages of 5mg and 10mg, much smaller than the THC pills; the equal CBD & THC capsules contain a balanced combo of 10mg CBD and 10mg THC.

    Concentrated Cannabis Oil

    TetraLabs Liquid Gold Oil

Liquid Gold ($N/A): this is the same liquid formula as the THC GoldCaps; it can be taken alone as a medicine or used as a substitute in baking and cooking, or just used as a topping to any food that needs an extra kick. Each 25g bottle comes with 1,250mg of liquid THC, enough to make 50 edibles (if that’s your thing) that contain a 25mg dose of THC in each.

    Benefits & Effects

PureGold oil contains THC, which has been found to relieve several minor, and even severe, conditions and symptoms. THC is well known as an effective analgesic and anti-inflammatory, but it can also treat chronic illnesses like ADHD, anxiety, bipolar disorder, epilepsy, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal disorder, HIV, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and a host of other conditions.

Since the final product is an intensely refined THC concentrate, this oil is safer to smoke than other products that aren’t as filtered.

However, vaporizing is still considered to be healthier due to the lack of combustion, which goes easier on the lungs and gives a milder high. You only inhale the pure extracted cannabis concentrate that produces a light smell and thin vapor, making vaping more discreet and less fearful.

Depending on which PureGold product you choose, you’ll also get a sizable dose of CBD, which produces similar physiological effects as THC (they’re both cannabinoids after all), but won’t contribute to any psychoactive effects you experience. In fact, preliminary studies show that combining THC & CBD is actually better than having just one or the other. They work in concert through what’s known as the “entourage effect.”

Additionally, consumers who prefer to avoid any psychoactive effects altogether that comes along with ingesting THC, have options. Just scoop up some CBD vape oil also made available by TetraLabs.

It’s clear this company takes into consideration the wide variety of use-cases we cannabis lovers might have, which is something we have to applaud. We see only positive things ahead for this company.

Where to Buy TetraLabs’ PureGold Oil

    Dispensaries

PureGold oil can be purchased from medical marijuana storefronts or delivery-only dispensaries and collectives in California. In order to purchase any form of medical marijuana in California, you’ll need a medical marijuana recommendation, which you can get easily (read below).

    Nugg: The Online Cannabis Marketplace

Getting your rec and/or med card is incredibly easy thanks to our online medical marijuana evaluation service, NuggMD. You can go through the entire doctor evaluation process and get your recommendation in less than 10 minutes without even leaving the comfort of your own home.

You’ll receive an instant electronic copy of your recommendation via email, and your official hard-copy (complete with doctor’s signature, and raised embossed seal required by California dispensaries) will arrive in the mail a few days later.

You’ll even get an instant $20 credit for your first cannabis delivery!

Once you’re approved, you can use Nugg’s online delivery marketplace to browse local storefront and delivery dispensary options, compare locations and prices, and ultimately order online from any and all dispensaries that will deliver to your home.

Yes, friends, we live in an age of instant-gratification & convenience, why should cannabis be any exception?!

    TetraLabs Website

PureGold can also be ordered online directly from the TetraLabs website provide you pass a patient approval process. Once your info has been submitted the screening process usually takes 24-72 hours. Brands typically don’t deliver products directly to patients, but because the company’s also a collective they can legally deliver their own products to approved members.

Be wary of sites that claim to deliver medical marijuana without verifying documents, by mail (as opposed to personal courier) or across California state lines. These products are often inferior and their shipments illegal.

For a vape and dab concentrate that can be used a few different ways, PureGold oil products work phenomenally and taste great. Patients do have to pay a slightly premium price for them, but you can’t put a price on your health.

What People Are Saying About PureGold Oil

“I’m a big fan of puregold and have always thought it was very potent in comparison to other extracts.” Alevin

“You pay for the quality, taste, smell, and the best high… I’ve used puregold to help treat nausea, insomnia, and anxiety. I always feel very calm and collected.” Dabbigail

“It seems to last longer for me than my average Cloud session as I’ve been hitting the 3-hour mark before the effects wear off noticeably.” G.R.

  • Terpenes: What Are They & How Do They Affect You?

Medical marijuana consists of hundreds of compounds. THC and CBD are undoubtedly the best known — and studied — substances in cannabis.

However, the marijuana plant contains an amazing array of aromatic chemicals, called terpenes and flavonoids, which give the herb its distinctive scent, flavor, and taste.

Researchers now believe that these terpenes and flavonoids play a larger role than once thought when it comes to weed’s medicinal benefits.

  •

    What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are organic hydrocarbons (among the hundreds of chemical compounds found in cannabis) that plants manufacture and which act as a defense mechanism to deter herbivores (deer or insects) from eating them. Some terpenes even attract species of predators who naturally feed on plant herbivores. Science, right?

Terpenes work because they emit a strong aroma. They are frequently used as the basis of fragrances and flavorings in a wide variety of organic products. For example, the distinctive smell of lavender, mint, or marijuana is entirely due to the unique makeup of terpenes and flavonoids in each of these plant species.

Like cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, terpenes interact with neural and cellular receptors. In particular, they can modulate neurotransmitter levels. By binding to receptors in the brain, terpenes can inhibit the breakdown of serotonin (a feel-good neurotransmitter) or boost dopamine activity (the neurotransmitter that regulates pleasure, motivation, and reward).

In fact, the terpenes in cannabis provide many of the same benefits as anti-depressants, but without the often debilitating side effects that traditional tricyclic or re-uptake inhibiting medications entail.

THC, because of its psychoactive properties, has received the most interest from researchers. Likewise, CBD has attracted noticeable attention because of its effects on the body’s endocannabinoid system. In contrast, terpenes remain comparatively understudied and unappreciated, but preliminary evidence suggests they’re a much larger piece of the marijuana equation than we currently think.

    Weed Terpenes Facts

    Useful Facts About Terpenes

Despite our limited understanding of them, here are some intriguing things we do know about the terpenes in cannabis:

    • Scientists have identified no less than 120 terpenes in marijuana.
    • About 10 to 30% of cannabis resin consists of terpenes.
    • The terms “terpenes” and “terpenoids” are often used interchangeably. However, terpenoids are terpenes that have been chemically modified by curing or oxidation.
    • Terpenes are responsible for pot’s distinctive odor; it’s what drug-sniffing dogs zero in on.
    • Synthetic forms of marijuana — such as Marinol — lack terpenes, which may explain why many patients find Marinol so ineffective as a medicine.
    • The terpenes in cannabis are often virtually identical to those found in other plants.
    • Evidence indicates that the terpene Myrcene boosts the effect of THC. Anecdotal reports suggest that eating Myrcene-rich mangos prior to ingesting cannabis can increase both the medical and psychoactive impact of THC.

    Terpenes & The Entourage Effect

Most of the scientific and medical interest in terpenes has centered on their synergistic effects. For example, Dr. Ethan Russo has specifically called attention the so-called “entourage effect,” which refers to the way that the various compounds in cannabis work together and reinforce each other.

More specifically, the presence of terpenes in marijuana can actually inhibit THC’s intoxicating effects. However, as Dr, Russo notes, the modulation of THC actually serves to increase marijuana’s “therapeutic index” meaning that an inhibition of THC’s effects can actually produce more medical value for you, the consumer.

The dissatisfaction most patients experience with Marinol, a synthetic form of THC, illustrates shortcomings that stem from ignoring the entourage effect. Put simply, many patients find that the isolated concentrations of THC (meaning it lacks terpenes and any other cannabinoids) in Marinol produce a very unpleasant, ineffective experience.

In fact, cannabis researchers believe that both terpenes and cannabinoids like CBD work to modulate THC’s effects. In particular, the presence of terpenes and compounds like CBD are thought to lessen anxiety while boosting THC’s analgesic (pain-relieving) properties, among other effects.

This “phytocannabinoid-terpenoid synergy,” according to Dr. Russo, is the key to marijuana’s extraordinary versatility and effectiveness as a medicine, and is something we’re excited to learn more about as new research is conducted.

In a word, the marijuana plant as a whole is more beneficial than the sum of its constituent parts. With terpenes in the mix, you get more bang for your buck.

    Difference Between Terpenes and Flavonoids

    Flavonoids in Cannabis

Flavonoids are nutrients that give many plants their distinctive colors. For example, flavonoids are the compounds that give blueberries their vibrant hue. There’s already over 6,000 identified flavonoids known to scientists, and over 20 are found to exist in cannabis.  In particular, they are noted for their nutritive, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. The role they play in marijuana’s therapeutic effects is not well-known, but like terpenes, they are believed to have a synergistic influence.

Only time will tell, as clinical studies will hopefully be possible in the not-too-distant future, once cannabis is removed from the federal list of Schedule I substances.

Choosing Cannabis Strains Based on Terpene Profiles

Terpenes are the building blocks of cannabinoids, plant hormones, and pigments. So, they naturally play a huge role in marijuana’s overall psychological and physical effects. Of course, terpene concentrations and configurations will vary considerably from strain to strain and even batch to batch. Environmental conditions and curing methods will also have a tremendous impact on terpene qualities.

Many medical marijuana patients select specific strains by their scent. There is a sound basis for this. Different terpene concentrations have unique fragrances and medicinal properties. For example, anecdotal reports suggest that strains with a musk or clover scent provide relaxing and sedative effects. In contrast, pot with a piney scent is known for promoting mental alertness and boosting memory. And weed with a lemony scent is renowned for its mood-elevating qualities.

The following are a few of the better-known terpenes along with their characteristics, the medical effects that they’re known for, and some typical strains you can find to match:

    Myrcene

Musky aroma. It’s normally found in fruit, but it is the most common terpene found in cannabis too. It is believed to quicken and intensify pot’s psychoactive properties. It is also known for its painkilling, sedative, and insomnia-fighting properties.

    • Medical Value: Natural antioxidant with anti inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. Also indicated for insomnia, depression, and muscle tension.
    • Strains to Look For: Pure Kush, White Widow, and El Nino.

    • Strains to Look For: Hash Plant and Trainwreck.

    Terpinolene

Sweet, floral scent. Studies indicate that terpinolene tends to induce drowsiness. It has also been identified as a potential tumor inhibitor.

    • Medical Value: Has a sedative effect on the central nervous system. Also, believed to have antibacterial, antioxidant, antifungal, and anti-tumor properties.
    • Strains to Look For: Pineapple Jack, Lemon Sour Diesel, and Super Jack.

    Camphene

Pungent smell reminiscent of fir needles. Animal experiments suggest that camphene may help lower cholesterol.

    • Medical Value: Research indicates it is natural antibiotic with antiinflammatory properties.
    • Strains to Look For: Indica strains.

    Terpineol

Smells like lilacs. It is believed to have a  calming effect as well as antibiotic and antimicrobial properties.

    • Medical Value: Studies indicate it is an antioxidant.
    • Strains to Look For: Jack Herer.

    Geraniol

    • Medical Value: May have fever-reducing and memory-enhancing properties. Also indicated for reducing stress.
    • Strains to Look For: Usually found only in trace amounts in cannabis, but believed to contribute the the entourage effect.

    Linalool

Lavender fragrance. Studies suggest that it has anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects.

    • Medical Value: Lowers anxiety, alleviates depression, and reduces convulsions.
    • Strains to Look For: Lavender, LA Confidential, and Amnesia Haze.

    Phellandrene

Described as having a peppermint/citrus aroma. Turmeric, which has been used for centuries by Chinese herbalists to treat fungal infections, is very high in this terpene.

    Conclusion

Terpenes are widely recognized as a safe and all-natural way to promote wellness. Increasingly, patients and medical professionals are recognizing the important role they play in medical marijuana, as terpenes can help patients identify the most suitable strains for specific conditions. In addition, their synergistic effect, which magnifies the therapeutic value of cannabinoids and THC, is only beginning to be understood.

  • CBD Syrup: Is “Weed Lean” the New “Purple Drank”?

We get it, Lil Wayne is your spirit animal and you totally want to get your “lean” on (legally). Luckily for us medical marijuana patients, we’re living through a revolutionary time in the history of cannabis innovation and science—a point proven by the creation of hemp and marijuana CBD syrups.

They’re growing in popularity, especially with young consumers, by replacing a similar but dangerous drink, lean (a.k.a. sizzurp or purple drank).

Haven’t heard of it, or lean? No problem, just continue reading and you’ll learn about this fascinating CBD incarnation including the different types of syrups, how they became popular, where to get them, the difference between hemp and cannabis CBD, and more!

  •

CBD Syrup: A New Way to Find Relief

CBD products like syrups are a new, easy, and incognito way to get “crunk” (by crunk we mean medicinal relief). They’re therapeutic, medicinal, absolutely non-lethal and contain no adverse side effects.

As simple, natural cannabis and/or hemp derived mixtures, CBD syrups can treat a myriad of problems and conditions like insomnia, inflammation joint and muscle pains, seizures, anxiety, and opiate withdrawal from substances like codeine. They definitely get the job done.

Simply pour the desired amount of syrup into your beverage of choice, usually a fruity-flavored carbonated soda like Sprite or Fanta, add some ice (or even a Jolly Rancher for extra flavor), mix it up a bit, and enjoy.

While most patients prefer using this diluted method as the easiest method of consumption, others simply ingest the non-psychoactive syrup as you would any liquid medicine; or get creative and pour some into a joint, infuse blunt wraps, or even vaporize it!

    A Healthier Alternative to Lean

This mixing method is identical to “lean” codeine concoctions, also known as sizzurp or purple drank, popularized by rappers like Lil Wayne, A$AP Ferg, and Three 6 Mafia, whose hit “Sippin on Some Sizzurp” made the drink more publicly known and socially acceptable.

    Lil Wayne Sizzurp

The main difference is that promethazine codeine can be dangerous, or even deadly, when abused. Lil Wayne himself has been hospitalized multiple times from drinking too much, and he’s been lucky worse hasn’t happened.

DJ Screw, the Houston, Texas DJ/producer known for his pioneering “Chopped & Screwed” method of slowing down and mixing hip-hop tracks, died of a codeine overdose due to mixing lean with valium and PCP.

Like, come on people, those are not smart decisions, and by no means are we drawing any direct correlations between CBD syrup and codeine “lean” drinks in regards to their effects on the body. CBD is among the most harmless (in fact beneficial) substances available to everyday consumers, while the exact opposite can be said about lean.

With sizzurp’s decreasing popularity, CBD hemp syrups have come along to fill the void and are quickly gaining momentum, especially among the hip-hop community (and in turn, young cool kids) as a much safer, even healthy, alternative while still providing the same familiar ingestion method, and some of the sedating, calming effects.

This notion isn’t lost on the companies that produce CBD syrups.

Instead of just marketing their products purely as a medicinal syrups like Robitussin, brands like Cloud N9ne are capitalizing on this void left by lean, enlisting rapper Redman, a notoriously marijuana enthusiast, as a celebrity endorser.

    Cloud N9ne Syrup Redman

Even Actabliss has teamed up with rapper Riff Raff in a promotional contest to find who can design the most flamboyant and original cup from which to sip your CBD lean.

    What’s Hot in CBD Syrups

Cannabis CBD syrups and liquid THC drinks are now highly popular and can be found in almost any medical marijuana dispensary. But like just about anything, some brands are better, or at least more well-known, than others. Some of the more popular brand name hemp and weed lean syrups include:

    • Actabliss: based in San Diego, available in THC with CBD 2oz. bottles (higher THC and pure CBD coming soon).
    • Cannabinoid Creations: hemp based syrups available in grape or cherry, each in AM or PM form.
    • Cannavis Syrup: organic THC syrup handcrafted and made in small batches; available in eight fruity flavors (CBD syrup coming soon).
    • Cloud N9ne Syrup: contains 60mg of Charlotte’s Web & AC/DC CBD strains in every bottle and absolutely no THC.
    • Dreem CBD: comes in grape flavored AM & HD (daytime) 60mg & 200mg bottles
    • Slactavis: THC & CBD syrups offered in 350mg, 1,500mg, 2,000mg & 6,000mg bottles (the strongest available), packaging more similar to cough medicine.
    • Tree Lean: has 1,000mg of raw, blue agave THC infused syrup; available in seven flavors.

    Cloud N9ne Hemp Syrups

Of these seven, Cloud N9ne has become one of the most popular brands turning out CBD lean syrup. This is partly because the stuff has no THC, and in fact, doesn’t even have a CBD dose to classify it as real medical cannabis, making it legally available if you’re at least 18.

Featuring colorful flavors like watermelon, blueberry, grape and cherry, Cloud N9ne’s infused syrups are perfect for anxiety, insomnia, and pain relief, but can’t promise to provide the same level of effects as a true, cannabis-derived CBD drink would.

The company calls it a “hemp syrup,” though hemp contains cannabidiol (CBD) levels that are too low to be beneficial, which has about 64mg of (presumably hemp) CBD in each bottle. It also lists CBD-dominant strains AC/DC and Charlotte’s Web (created by crossbreeding with hemp) as ingredients, along with nine powerful, all-natural herbs.

However, the syrup’s specific ingredient amounts and ratios remain unknown; we assume its legal because the two practically pure CBD strains have been diluted with hemp and are listed in name only.

So how does Cloud N9ne produce its relaxing effects while seemingly lacking the potency to do it? This content confusion leaves the reason(s) for feeling high up in the air.

Could it just be a placebo effect? After all, other hemp-derived CBD products are marketed as being “available in all fifty states” and are thus nothing more than a dietary supplement with limited scientific evidence to back up any claims.

    CBD vs. THC Syrups

Cannabis products richer in CBD (or Cannabidiol), a cannabinoid found in all cannabis, are generally more calming and relaxing than THC and provide significant medical benefits without the heavy “stoned” sensation commonly associated with THC.

Indeed, there are some legitimate, high-CBD syrups out there on the market in states where medical cannabis is legal, and which will afford you the real medical benefits of CBD. Of course, you’ll need a recommendation from a doctor if you hope to purchase such products legally.

    Baked Bros THC syrup

For those seeking the “stoned” sensation, or just want something stronger with real psychoactivity, THC-infused syrups and drinks are also becoming just as common.

Companies like Baked Bros, winners of High Times’ Cannabis Cup and many other awards, are making high-quality pourable weed syrups that will surely spice up your sodas and leave you leaning. Their 300mg and 600mg bottles are available in grape, cherry, strawberry kiwi, mango, and watermelon flavors.

But seriously, be careful with those kind of dose amounts, as even 300mg THC is enough to put even the most seasoned cannabis vet on their ass.

Some of these syrup products, like the marijuana they are derived from, contain a mixture of CBD and THC. Different ratios of each will provide different effects, so it’s best to experiment in small doses with each until you find what works for you.

Another common emerging product, liquid THC/CBD drinks, are similar in that they combine hemp-derived CBD or THC oil with a beverage. Where is Cloud N9ne syrup for sale? How much does it cost? On average, a 4 oz bottle of CBD syrup will cost you $30-40. But remember, these hemp-only CBD drinks aren’t what you’ll find on cannabis dispensary shelves. In fact, you’re more likely to find them on the shelves of your nearest grocery store.

If you are looking for real, cannabis-derived CBD products, the best place to locate CBD syrup is at legal cannabis dispensaries in your area, in states where cannabis-derived syrups are available.

If you’re looking for an even easier way to get your hands on this stuff (and you live in California), you can order from a wide selection of cannabis dispensaries online at getnugg.com.

    How Much Should I Drink?

Remember, dosage depends on the type of CBD you’re taking. If it’s a hemp CBD syrup like Cloud N9ne, you don’t need to worry about THC (but should be aware of other ingredients intended to produce similar effects), and even if you downed the whole bottle, you still wouldn’t be getting a high-enough dose of CBD to be considered a “medical” product.

If you’re trying a syrup that has THC like Actabliss, it’s best to start slow and low then work your way up from there.

We also advise you do some research in advance, and always pay attention to how many milligrams of CBD and/or THC it contains. Read product reviews online, ask your friends, consult with the budtender taking your order (whether it be through an online delivery platform like Nugg or at a storefront dispensary), or even go so far as to ask your primary physician what he or she thinks.

Of course, that last suggestion is not an option for most of us, which is why NuggMD allows you to safely connect with a licensed, pro-cannabis doctor online to get your recommendation or medical marijuana card.

The evaluation process offers you an opportunity to ask a friendly and knowledgeable MMJ doctor any and all questions you might have related to using medical cannabis to treat your stress, anxiety, and any other problems!

    Testimonials

“I like how [CBD syrup] isn’t a drug, although I was still expecting it to feel more like a high. It serves its purpose and it is a very relaxing and euphoric experience, and in its own bracket it’s flawless. It’s not what I expected but it’s definitely worth a try.” James D.

“I was skeptical at first, but saw so much hype on [Cloud N9ne’s] twitter account from people saying they love it, I gave it a try. I’m glad I did. Not only does it taste good, I was super relaxed and feeling good…Shockingly it seems to be working better and better for me than my prescription for anxiety. I will definitely be buying more when I run out!” —Nicole B.

“I’m a long time customer of [CBD] syrup. I have COPD which happens to be a respiratory disease…[it] has in fact helped with relief of pressure as I live with a feeling of a rubber band around my chest.” —Peter C.

    Final Thoughts

As CBD syrups continue to grow in popularity as a legal, THC-free substitute to opiates, alcohol, high sugar energy drinks and even coffee, more companies/brands are popping up trying to capitalize on this vacancy.

Some are clearly doing so to provide pain relief for those who don’t have access to insurance, or even a med marijuana card, while others are simply trying to profit from these sick by promoting a panacea that’s actually a placebo.
