  • Flav Asian OG 3.5g Indica Strain (2018 Review)

In the past two years, many changes have swept through the California cannabis market–new laws, shops, brands. Though I’m thankful the industry is expanding and giving us more options than ever, I sometimes find myself lost like that first day of school; it’s exciting but can feel overwhelming.

Some days I’m in the mood to experiment with something new, but other days I just want some high-quality flower to twist up.

A welcomed constant in the ever-changing tides of the cannabis industry sea, Flav (formerly FlavRX) is a reliable brand producing flower, vape cartridges, edibles, tinctures, live resin concentrates and capsules.

Does their Asian OG 3.5g indica strain provide those heavier, calming effects, or is it just a mediocre strain? Discover that and much more in this thorough appraisal.

  • In this Flav Asian OG strain review, you'll learn about its:

    Packaging, Labeling & Product Design

Flav’s flower packaging isn’t that impressive, but gets the job done–not unlike wearing an Old Navy shirt. The eighth comes in a glass jar with a black, child-proof, twist-off top and tamper-proof sticker seal.

There’s no box or plastic bag for protection like most prepackaged flower and, unlike Flow Kana’s flower, the glass has no UV protection so it’s more prone to light and heat exposure. However, the label and testing sticker wrap the jar, protecting it from sunlight.

Flav includes a Boveda two-way humidity pack to help keep the cannabis fresh, a nice touch that not all brands add. Since I plan to roll this Asian OG into joints, I don’t want a dry, crumbly texture.

Like the packaging, the labeling leaves a bit to be desired. The stickers outside of the jar have the basic adult-use info like the brand name, strain name, weight, warnings, verifiable testing results (24.9% THC and 0.1% CBD), and manufacturing and best by dates.

The label itself has a bland black, white and gray color scheme; nothing eye-catching. When it comes to flower, I really don’t care about the package’s style as long as the jar is sturdy and the strain is top-shelf.

However, I do care about the details. I’d like to see some info on the brand, growing practices and strain lineage, which could fit on an exterior box or plastic bag.

A terpene profile and other detected cannabinoids would have also been nice. After a quick online search, I actually found some of that information on their Twitter. This flower is grown indoors in Orange County, California, blooms for 60 days, and contains the terpenes geraniol (.2%), ocimene (.3%) and myrcene (.2%).

    Quality, Ease of Use

This Asian OG 1/8th doesn’t have the same aroma I’m used to in other OG strains. After opening the jar, I was immediately hit with a peppery smell, which doesn’t really tickle my fancy. But as I started breaking and grinding the buds, the flower released a different yet familiar fragrance: that wonderfully “kushy” smell reminiscent of Master Kush and Bubba Kush (both of which I’d like to see as Jedi Knights). It’s rich, almost nutty, like a semi-sweet coffee bean, along with subtle piney and lemony notes.

The buds had a great density and texture and were larger than average (the biggest was nearly two grams). They were frosty, pulled apart easily and left a slightly sticky residue on my fingertips, a great sign that this premium flower will fit easily in a cone.

    Potency, Effectiveness & Affordability

The first puff induces a few coughs and a slight throat tickle, but overall, my hit was smooth. While the flavor isn’t as bright as the aroma would suggest, it isn’t unappealing. What entices me the most about Flav flower is its consistently pleasing effects.

Asian OG has a relatively strong onset, probably due to the high THC content, as I felt a body high almost immediately, starting with my head and facial muscles. After smoking a full joint, the flower calmed my spastic stomach, eased my shoulder tension and made my eyes heavy for a few hours.

I recommend using this strain after a long week while binge-watching a new Netflix series, or for a post-workout recovery and muscle relaxation. Don’t plan any social outings with this stuff.

An eighth/3.5 grams of Flav’s Asian OG will set you back $55. That number feels a bit steep for the lack of packaging, even for a quality OG. I’d buy this again, but only if I needed its strong sedative effects.

Nugg Score: How the Nugg Team Rates This Product

    Packaging: 3.5/5

    • Packaged in a simple glass jar with a child-resistant lid and a two-way humidity pack to maintain a proper moisture content.
    • Nothing appealing or eye-catching about the graphics used.
    • Lab test label was placed really awkwardly (down the side and wrapped around the bottom.
    • I would like to have seen more thought put into this packaging.

    Labeling: 3/5

    • Sufficient labeling for adult-use compliance, but not much else.
    • Jar includes net weight, strain name, brand name and web/social media addresses, and government warnings.
    • Includes lab-test label with QR code to verify results and a breakdown of THC (24.9%) and CBD (0.1%).
    • A profile of the major terpenes and other detected cannabinoids would have also been nice to see, plus any information about the growing practices and strain lineage.

    Aroma: 3.5/5

    • Hits you with a peppery smell as soon as you open the jar (not my favorite experience).
    • Released the wonderful “kushy” fragrance as I started breaking and grinding up the flower.
    • Rich, almost nutty aroma almost like a sweet coffee bean.
    • Complemented with the subtle OG smell characterized by lemon and pine.

    Taste: 3/5

    • Tastes slightly chalky.
    • Flavor isn’t so bad that you don’t want to smoke this flower.
    • I expected a much more enjoyable flavor after smelling the ground buds, but no dice.

    Texture: 5/5

    • Buds were on the large size for an eighth (the largest was almost 2 grams!).
    • Two-way humidity pack enabled the flower to hold an ideal moisture level and maintained a fresh feeling.
    • Well-formed buds that pulled apart easily, leaving a nice sticky residue on my fingers.

    Quality of Smoke: 3.5/5

    • This made for a little scratchiness in the back of the throat and inspired a few coughs.
    • On the smooth side overall.

    Ash Test: 5/5

    • White and soft all the way through.

    Effectiveness: 5/5

    • Flower produces relaxing, pain easing effects that I’m after when choosing a strain.
    • Calmed my spasming stomach and began to relieve my shoulder tension.
    • Slightly sedative, not a great daytime strain if you want to be productive.

    Consistency: 5/5

    • Flav makes sure to maintain optimal conditions for their different specific genetics.
    • We can trust this Asian OG will always be grown in the same conditions that are ideal for this strain.

    Price: 3/5

    • For flower that didn’t smell wonderful on the first whiff and lacked in taste, $55 is steep.
    • I enjoyed the effects and the flower seemed well-grown, but it’s hard to rationalize spending that much on cannabis that I didn’t completely love.

    Overall Rating: 3.95

While the charcoal labeling and basic info aren’t very memorable, the thick, sticky flower is. Flav’s Asian OG tastes earthy, rich and lemony with a hint of pine that doesn’t hurt the throat too much and burns white and soft throughout. Its mellow indica high packs a nice punch so try it for serious pain relief, unwinding after work or just lounging.

Still, I wouldn’t buy it if I wanted something more flavorful or energizing, especially with the steeper cost. After enough of this, you’ll feel less like the Energizer Bunny and more like the Chillout Chinchilla.

  • NUG Cannabis-Infused Milk Chocolate Bar (2018 Review)

Let’s face it: cannabis products are more expensive these days. But, then again, what isn’t?

If you need MMJ daily or have a high tolerance like me, every dispensary trip ends in spending a serious chunk of change. Being on a budget, I’m always looking for affordable and effective products that won’t break the bank.

Sadly, with many of these, the trade-off for a reasonable price is a lack of quality. But sometimes I get lucky and find a quality, affordable edible that uses organic ingredients like NUG’s 80mg Milk Chocolate Bar.

Did I find the Golden Ticket? Keep reading this comprehensive review to find out!

  • In this NUG milk chocolate bar review, you'll learn about its:

[Click any of the section titles below to jump there]

    Packaging, Labeling & Product Design

The generic packaging leaves a bit to be desired. This cannabis milk chocolate bar comes in a matte black, child-resistant, resealable bag with large red stickers on either side. Besides this bright red color, the labeling doesn’t jump out.

When I opened it I expected to see a box, or at least foil wrapping, but was disappointed to find no protective layer between the bar and the bag. Only bare chocolate, broken from a lack of protective packaging. Willy Wonka would never have accepted these standards–but he also scarred children for life with his hellish boat ride. You win some, you lose some.

As far as labeling, NUG provides all the information required by California Adult-Use law, though it’s aesthetically boring. It’s like the lentil soup of cannabis; so good, but you’d never know by looking at it! The back lists the organic ingredients, nutritional facts, a brief description of the product, dosing instructions and lab test results.

Yet these results show the THC content actually falls a few milligrams short of the advertised 80mg to 77.03mg, contradicting the front label.

I wish the labeling included the strain(s) used or at least an indication of cannabis type–indica, sativa, or hybrid–so I know what to expect.

“Excuse me, is this car a manual or automatic?” “Who cares?! Just drive!” Makes total sense, right?

The chocolate bar looks like a type one, only divided into eight demarcated pieces with 10mg of THC, though each actually has 9.63mg. All are stamped with either the NUG name or logo so you know these aren’t typical chocolates, a crucial component considering there’s no inner packaging.

    Quality, Ease of Use

As soon as I sink my teeth into a piece of NUG’s milk chocolate, I can instantly tell it’s made from quality ingredients. The brown treat is dense, velvety, and has a subtle caramel note making it more interesting than the average chocolate edible.

It’s full of organic ingredients like cane sugar, whole milk, 39% cacao beans, cocoa butter, non-fat milk, soy lecithin and vanilla beans, not to mention ethically grown, pure cannabis distillate. No artificial flavors or colors.

The lower than average total THC content (typically 100mg) and the standard 10mg pieces are a good dose if you’re an edible newbie and/or have a low to moderate tolerance. They’re filling, so if you require more milligrams try a smaller and lighter edible like Kushy Punch’s 100mg gummy for a couple more bucks. Or pig out on the candy bar. It’s your life. I’m not your mom. YOLO!

    Potency, Effectiveness & Affordability

Affordability is where this NUG milk bar really shines. At just about $10 for 80mg of THC, it’s a great deal–even if mine lacks about 3mg. It’ll be hard to find a higher quality edible for the same low price. Because of this affordability, I can look past the lackluster packaging and cleanly broken pieces. As the saying goes, “cheap things come in dull packages” (that’s not a real thing people say).

This infused chocolate bar provided a mellow mood with relaxing properties, though didn’t make me nearly as hungry as I assumed it would; maybe because it’s a bit heavy. In fact, I couldn’t finish my dinner (which may or may not have been lentil soup).

However, I was able to have a lucid conversation with a friend and it helped my digestion. I’d appreciate these pleasant, mild effects on my next camping trip. It’d be more fun than using a Hershey bar to make s’mores with friends around a crackling fire.

Nugg Score: How the Nugg Team Rates This Product

    Packaging: 2/5

    • Packaged in a generic, child-resistant, zip-bag with branded stickers on both sides.
    • No box or foil wrapping around the chocolate.
    • Broken pieces due to a lack of protective packaging.

    Labeling: 3.5/5

    • Just enough for adult-use compliance and a bit more.
    • Lacks visual appeal; lab results on the back contradict the frontside.
    • I would have liked to see some info about the strains used, maybe an indica, sativa or hybrid classification.

    Easy to Dose: 3/5

    • Dosage isn’t exactly 10mg and requires some calculation.
    • Indented to make eight 10mg (actually 9.63mg) pieces, but separating those into anything smaller is tricky.

    Discretion: 2.5/5

    • Without any foil to conceal this edible, carrying it in the black and red bag might raise an eyebrow.
    • Could be re-bagged, just make sure nobody sees the word NUG stamped on the chocolate.

    Taste: 4.5/5

    • Tastes like your average milk chocolate bar; no cannabis taste.
    • Nothing spectacular–if you enjoy straight milk chocolate, you’ll like this bar.

    Texture: 5/5

    • Exactly as it should be, smooth chocolate that melts in your mouth.
    • Nothing granular; no residue left behind.

    Effectiveness: 5/5

    • Provided a mellow mood with relaxing and sedative properties.
    • Didn’t make me nearly as hungry as I thought it would and I couldn’t quite finish my dinner.
    • Helped me digest my meal and I was able to have a lucid conversation with a friend.
    • A good choice if you want to stay clear-headed but enjoy a chill buzz.

    Versatility: 5/5

    • A solid milk chocolate bar that can be melted down into any recipe that calls for chocolate.
    • Use it in frosting, a cake, hot chocolate–the sky’s the limit.
    • Pieces can be broken into “chips” and used in cookies, trail mix or a topping for ice cream or yogurt.

    Consistency: 4/5

    • While the chocolate will always taste the same, the THC content might not be as high as you think.
    • You might open the package to find your chocolate bar in pieces.

    Price: 4/5

    • At $10, this is a good deal for a chocolate bar with 80mg of THC.
    • If the packaging was better and the labeling was more thorough and consistent, this would have earned a five.

    Overall Rating: 3.85

While the packaging is bland and weak, NUG’s 80mg Milk Chocolate Bar is an affordable, no-frills, edible that’ll give you a chill buzz and keep you clear-headed. It’s great if you have a low tolerance or are new to edibles; just remember even two pieces can be filling.

You won’t break the bank with this bar. So think less a “world of pure imagination” and more a “world of affordable sufficiency.” Or maybe just don’t think about that too much at all.

Stop by the Nugg Marketplace and search your local dispensary to see if NUG’s 80mg Milk Chocolate Bar is available for delivery if your area!

  • Flav Cocoa Nibs Dark Chocolate (2018 Review)

Heath bars are one of my all-time favorite sweets. Growing up I’d start every family road trip by spending my hard-earned babysitting money on a Heath bar from the first gas station along the way. And by hard-earned, I mean sitting kids in front of the TV while I talked to my BF Brittany about cute Travis from Miller’s Outpost.

I felt that same palpable excitement when I opened Flav’s 100mg Cocoa Nibs Dark Chocolate Bar. Flav has become a sort of stalwart in the California cannabis market providing quality flower, concentrates, tinctures, topicals and edibles (oh my!).

Can these cocoa and toffee nibs live up to my childhood expectations while making me feel another type of excitement? Continue below to discover that and more in this comprehensive review.

  • In this Flav Cocoa Nibs review, you'll learn about its:

[Click any of the section titles below to jump there]

    Packaging, Labeling & Product Design

    flav cocoa nibs review

The thick, brown box’s minimal design and lack of eye-popping graphics make it barely noticeable, though a picture of the cocoa nibs and the word “cannabis” are prominent.

The labeling hits all the major points and compliance needs: storage technique (something too many edible brands fail to provide), batch number, dosing information, ingredients, nutritional facts, THC and CBD content, total cannabinoids, and a scannable QR code to verify testing results.

However, I noticed the bar falls 10mg short with 90.55mg THC and the back says “Made by Kaneh Co.,” another brand. Does Flav provide the flower while Kaneh Co. produces the chocolate?

Inside, the bar comes in a resealable, toffee-colored plastic bag that repeats a lot of the same info, which I appreciate considering I usually throw the box away. Although the info is detailed, there aren’t any specifics on strain(s) used, terpene profile or extraction information, all of which should be the norm. But, then again, Twitter always begs the question: “What’s normal?”

    Quality, Ease of Use

This 100mg Cocoa Nibs bar is made using Flav’s own cannabis, which is cultivated according to the specific needs of each strain. Then the brand utilizes a super clean CO2 extraction method that produces a solvent-free, tasty extract with natural terpenes.

When I pull out the chocolate, it’s completely intact, which isn’t always a given (NUG’s 80mg Milk Chocolate Bar was broken before opened).

All 10 pieces are very discernible with deep grooves, making it incredibly easy to break or cut. Each is debossed with the Flav logo or 10mg amount, so you know the proper dose; but in this case each piece contains 9.055mg of THC.

Every nib is thick and substantial so eating my typical 40mg dose, or four pieces (36.22mg), is enough to satiate my sugar and flavor cravings. It’s like having “The Great British Baking Show” in my mouth.

The chocolate itself is creamy and rich but not overpowering. The toffee adds a firm crunch that pairs nicely with the slightly bitter cocoa base, giving it the flavor of my beloved Heath bar but, because it uses cocoa nibs instead of milk chocolate, has a sharper and more refined taste.

I can barely notice the cannabis, which doesn’t taste burnt like so many extractions.

This sweetness and subtlety make Flav’s chocolate toffee great for many dessert recipes. I could break it over ice cream or add it to batter to make chunky cookies! I’d buy this at my local health food store even if it wasn’t infused with cannabis! And I’d totally share it with Travis (call me).

    Potency, Effectiveness & Affordability

    flav cocoa nibs review

As much as I love the flavor and versatility, I bought this edible for its effects.

I took my dose before Disneyland and, after about an hour, I gradually felt my usual body rush. This made standing in line tough since my legs became heavier. I was even close to couch-lock and nearly became a permanent resident of the Haunted Mansion. If you’re looking to get a more immediate and uplifting high, try a different edible.

These Flav 100mg cocoa nibs are moderately priced at $18, considering the lower THC content, flavor profile and calming effects. While I’d buy this again because of my Heath bar fixation, you can find a superior infused chocolate like a KIVA bar that tastes and medicates more effectively for a few dollars more.

Nugg Score: How the Nugg Team Rates This Product

    Packaging: 3/5

    • A minimally designed thin brown cardboard box and a sturdy, child-resistant, resealable bag.
    • Packaging includes a picture cocoa nibs, though it’s just a sliver and difficult to see with the lab testing sticker.

    Labeling: 4/5

    • Better-than-average labeling that addresses all compliance info and most of my questions.
    • Includes a scannable QR code to verify testing results.
    • Total THC content is 10mg shorter than advertised; back label also says the bar is made by another brand.

    Easy to Dose: 4.5/5

    • The bar is divided into clearly marked 10mg servings, but if you need less you’ll need a knife.
    • Dosage warning reminds you to consult your doctor as cannabis affects everyone differently (I love this).
    • Start with one or two bars/pieces then see how you feel after an hour.

    Discretion: 4/5

    • At first glance and from afar this edible looks like any other dark chocolate bar, but up close stamped the brand name and dosage give it away.
    • Minimal cannabis smell; could be eaten at the office, school or even home without anyone noticing it’s cannabis-infused.

    Taste: 4/5

    • If you enjoy dark chocolate with bits of toffee, you’ll love this.
    • I prefer milk chocolate so it was a bit strong for me, but delicious nonetheless.
    • Cannabis is very well hidden, though there was an overly bitter taste after eating a few of cocoa nibs.

    Texture: 4/5

    • It’s easy to hold (not too oily or dry) but, in my experience, does melt faster than others.
    • Softness detracts from the smooth, consistent texture so refrigerate or store in a cool, dark place.

    Effectiveness: 4/5

    • Having a minimal tolerance for edibles, I started with four bars (about 40mg) to gauge the effects.
    • Felt sedative effects after about an hour; very calming and relaxing.
    • My legs grew heavy and heavier; perfect for chilling on the couch or before bed. Not the ideal daytime edible.

    Versatility: 5/5

    • Extremely versatile since it can be melted down and added to a variety of dessert recipes.
    • Eat it solo, dip in peanut butter, add to S’mores, crumble/shave on ice cream, blend in a milkshake–get creative!

    Consistency: 3/5

    • Out of the three packages I purchased, these nibs were very similar if not identical in size and taste.
    • Potency differed; the second batch felt much less potent, leaving me to assume not every package is as strong as advertised.

    Price: 3/5

    • If you’re new to cannabis, it’s appropriately priced at $18 a bar considering the dosage/cannabinoid content, ingredients, packaging and effects. If you have a high tolerance or consume edibles daily, it’s too much for too little.
    • While this bar is good, it doesn’t stand out against others in terms of taste and effect.

    Overall Rating: 3.85

The 100mg Flav Cocoa Nibs Dark Chocolate Bar’s creamy outside, slightly bitter cocoa taste and crunchy toffee center bring me back to my childhood obsession with Heath bars–and Travis from Miller’s Outpost (call me). Only this one looks a bit more gourmet than cannabis cocoa and produces a mellow high that might keep you glued to your seat.

If you eat edibles frequently, the price and missing 10mg could be a deal breaker, though it’s simplicity and labeled pieces are great for newbies who want a more familiar entry into edibles.

  • HoneyVape Blackberry Kush .5g Cartridge (Complete Review)

When concentrates first came on the scene, the headlines about dabbing, and even vaping, addressed real concerns about their quality and potential contamination.

I still carry some of this worry, which is why I’m very particular about the vape cartridges I use.

After doing some research and asking around, the name “HoneyVape” kept popping up, so I decided to try their tasty-sounding Blackberry Kush .5g vape cartridge. (Also available in 1g.)

  • In this HoneyVape Blackberry Kush cartridge review, you'll learn about its:

    Brand Background

HoneyVape has an excellent reputation for producing some of the safest, most effective and tastiest vape cartridges, disposable pens and distillate applicators on the market. With a team made of equal parts scientists and master growers, the brand brings a new meaning to clean and potent concentrates.

The brand was the first vertically integrated collective in California, growing their own cannabis for patients, and also the first California company to make use of the distillation process. Their attention to research and revolutionary new techniques show in their products.

It’s also one of the only California cannabis companies to forego the winterization process, which uses alcohol or other solvents to purge lipids, fats, waxes and more natural cannabis oil components, creating a thinner product.

Instead, HoneyVape keeps the plant as whole as possible, preserving all of the cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoid and lipids to produce more natural, cleaner and healthier cannabis concentrates.

Because of this proprietary process, their concentrates can be thick, flavorful and offer a robust high. I chose their Blackberry Kush cartridge because it sounds fruity and I enjoy kush’s relaxing effects. I’m excited to try this after work!

    Packaging, Labeling & Product Design

    HoneyVape .5g Blackberry Kush Cartridge

The 0.5 gram vape oil tank sits inside a durable black plastic tube similar to those used for pre-rolls, though this is the first time I’ve seen it house a cartridge. (Mental note: reuse it as a joint tube.)

It’s wrapped with a sticker labeling all the necessary info: brand name, product type, strain name, ingredients, weight, batch number, manufacturing date, which lab tested it, health warnings and THC (74.6%) and CBD (0.15%) content. (NOTE: the video reviewed Blackberry Kush cartridge above is an older model with a slightly different cannabinoid content). This info comes in a modern, attractive white and rose gold font that exudes simplicity, quality and class.

I squeeze the sides of the childproof top between my thumb and index finger then the tube pops open. As I slide the small cartridge out I realize it has a stainless steel mouthpiece and base, glass chamber, ceramic core and a small HoneyVape logo subtly etched onto the mouthpiece.

Inside the glass tank, I can see a thick honey-colored oil that looks like liquid gold.

While I appreciate this detailed info, I’d love to know more about strain genetics, where the cannabis was sourced, and a terpene breakdown.

The website notes their cannabis is exclusively sourced from small Humboldt family farms, so I’d like to see that commitment highlighted. I know HoneyVape labs tests its products at least four times per batch but that isn’t stated on the package – a selling point that should be recognized.

    Quality, Ease of Use

The thick honey-colored goo inside of this glass chamber has the exact the color and transparency I look for in vape oil, confirming the quality. I easily twist the cartridge onto a normal 510-threaded battery and begin taking small, rapid puffs to pre-heat and loosen up the viscous gold oil inside.

As I take my first deep hit, I’m immediately struck by the flavor. It tastes like a mixed berry medley with notes of blackberry, strawberry and even blueberry. A deeply earthy undertone cuts through the fruity sweetness offering a balanced complexity. (I assume their proprietary extraction and distillation processes are partially responsible for this unmatched flavor.)

The flavor is further enhanced via “Fresh Mapping,” a technique that creates a scientific map of the chemical magic making each of their strains so flavorful and potent. Their scientists then re-introduce 25-40 terpenes, ensuring the final result resembles the whole plant while restoring any flavors that may have been purged. You won’t find any hard-to-pronounce chemicals or solvents here!

When it comes to using this blackberry kush cart I didn’t have any trouble getting a solid puff, despite its thick and almost immovable oil.

Luckily, HoneyVape designed their proprietary cartridges with a ceramic core built specifically to accommodate this viscosity. If clogging does arise, take initial rapid puffs, submerge the cartridge warm water or rub it quickly between your hands to loosen the oil.

    Potency, Effectiveness & Affordability

HoneyVape’s .5g Blackberry Kush cartridge is a mix of Afghani and Blackberry indica strains. But the brand knows cannabis potency is about more than just THC, focusing on providing a full spectrum of terpenes and phytochemicals vital to producing a robust, full-bodied high.

Like the flavor, the high comes on strong; I feel the oil’s potency after two solid hits. As the high sets in throughout my body, I feel very relaxed but remain alert. I don’t feel totally couch-locked, though I wouldn’t want to do any complicated or strenuous activities right now.

Indicas usually give me the munchies but the strong presence of the terpene humulene actually suppresses my hunger. I can feel all those pain-relieving properties of myrcene set in as well, relaxing my sore lower back.

Everything about this cartridge screams quality so it’s definitely worth the $40. While you can find similar cartridges for around the same price, you might not get the same experience or quality. I’d absolutely try this again along with their other offerings.

Nugg Score: How the Nugg Team Rates This Product

How the Nugg Vape Cartridge Rating System Works

    Packaging: 4/5

The plastic looks nice on the shelf and the rose gold, white, and black color scheme elevates the overall look. While the tube is thick enough to keep the cartridge safe inside and I appreciate that it offers UV protection, I wish it consisted of a more sustainable material.

    Labeling: 4/5

The packaging is a little small to include much info, so there were a couple of key things missing. I’d like to see a little more robust lab test reporting, plus background on the plant’s genetics and where/how the cannabis was cultivated. Other than that, the labeling was adequate for all California Adult-Use laws.

    Cartridge Quality: 5/5

Unlike some, this cartridge is made from very thick, durable and reliable materials: stainless steel, ceramic and glass; the HoneyVape logo is engraved on the mouthpiece.

    Taste: 5/5

The flavor is the most impressive aspect. It’s like sipping a mixed berry smoothie and, unlike so many concentrates with boasting fruity flavors, doesn’t taste artificial. It’s worth buying to experience the taste alone. The aroma matches the taste perfectly, with a distinct fruitiness undercut by an earthy undertone.

    Vapor Quality: 4.5/5

Smooth and very fragrant that didn’t irritate my throat or lungs, though I did cough after the second puff.

    Oil Quality: 5/5

Unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. It’s incredibly thick and almost looks immovable, but transparent. There’s no cloudiness or dark spots, only a beautiful golden oil that really does look like honey.

    Effectiveness: 5/5

A deeply relaxing strain stops just short of couch lock. Unlike other indica cartridges that make my head cloudy, this Blackberry Kush kept me alert while providing deep muscle relaxation. I’d love to use this strain for a movie night!

    Easy of Use: 4.5/5

Didn’t get a HoneyVape battery with your blackberry cartridge? Just twist it onto a standard 510-threaded pen and you’re ready. However, the oil’s thickness could cause some clogging, which would require warming the cart to loosen.

    Consistency: 5/5

Potency tested consistently high and the oil’s texture and look was the same thick, golden consistency across multiple cartridges. HoneyVape tests each batch at least four times to ensure that their products are consistent. This effort goes a long way.

    Price: 5/5

About $40 for a 0.5 gram of such tasty, attractive, effective and clean THC oil inside in a well-made cartridge is worth the price.

    Overall Rating: 4.7

The HoneyVape™ Blackberry Kush cartridge’s stainless steel and glass materials are sleek and sustainable, the oil is thick, clean and golden, the natural berry flavors are explosive, and the high is the perfect amount of relaxing.

Plus, HoneyVape eases my fear of contaminated concentrates; it’ll be hard to find a brand that can beat their commitment to quality. The only issue I had is with the oil’s thickness potentially causing a clog, which can be resolved. All this for under $50 is a price I’ll pay again and again!

  • Get Baked With These 3 Spooky Edible Recipes

The spirit of Halloween is based on do-it-yourself creativity. From homemade costumes to a spruced-up trick bag, the more handmade a prop is, the more authentic the experience feels–especially if it looks and tastes memorable.

Rather than making cannabutter from scratch, you can use cannabis-infused treats (chocolate bars work best) and melt them down, or break them up and add them to your favorite Halloween goody recipe.

This not only saves time, but you can order edibles from Nugg and have them delivered to your door while you hang cobwebs and carve jack-o-lanterns.

  • Try Making These Halloween Edible Recipes:

    Ghoulish Goodies From the Depths

Using a box of cake mix (vanilla or chocolate works best) and cannabis-infused cocoa nibs.

    Prep Time: 5 – 10 mins

    Cook Time: 9 – 10 mins

    Ingredients:

    • 1 box (16.5 oz) of vanilla or chocolate cake mix
    • 1/3 cup oil vegetable oil
    • 2 eggs.
    • Pack of Flav 100mg Cocoa Nibs Dark Chocolate Bars
    • Pack of edible eyes
    • Pack of edible fangs
    • Marshmallows or marshmallow bites

    Tools:

    • Spoon, spatula, hand mixer or standing mixer
    • Baking sheet
    • Wax paper or silicone baking mat
    • Microwave or stovetop and a double boiler (saucepan and metal or glass bowl also works)
    • Oven

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
    2. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Lightly coat the parchment paper with butter to prevent sticking.
    3. Melt the pack of Flav 100mg Cocoa Nibs in the microwave 1-3 minutes or chop them up and add in a double boiler for easy melting.
    4. In a large bowl combine the 2 eggs, oil, melted cannabis chocolate, the wet ingredients, before slowly adding the dry cake mix.
    5. Mix well.
    6. Use any kind of spoon or a small ice cream scoop to place rounded balls on to the lined cookie sheet. You can make them any size, but I like to shape mine about an inch because they’re easier to decorate that way.
    7. Place marshmallows on the raw cookie dough before placing in the oven.
    8. Bake for 8-12 minutes depending on your level of desired gooeyness.
    9. Let the cookies rest for 3-5 minutes cool either using a fan or the environment around you.
    10. Use some of the melted chocolate as glue to press on the edible eyes and wax fangs on the cookies. Use either a small spoon or a tooth pick to spread the chocolate on the back of the candy decorations and gently place them on the cookies. Place in the fridge for around 30 mins to let the chocolate harden.

Option: Skip melting the Flav cocoa nibs and place these chopped or broken pieces on top of the cookie dough, alongside the marshmallows.

    Spooky Demon Cookie Balls

    Using cannabis-infused cookies and chocolate

Prep: The day before Halloween. Usually takes 30 mins to an hour.

    Ingredients:

    • A pack of candy eyes
    • 2 packs of Korova Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies (20 cookies)
    • 1 pack cream cheese.
    • KIVA Blackberry Dark Chocolate Bar
    • 1 bag milk chocolate chips
    • 3 – 4 teaspoons of vegetable oil

    Tools:

    • Food processor or a heavy, blunt object (mallet, rolling pin, bottle) and a Ziploc bag
    • Large bowl
    • Refrigerator (for best results)

    Instructions:

    1. Ground the Korova Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies in the food processor or put in the Ziploc bag and smash them with a mallet or rolling pin to produce fine crumbs.
    2. Mix the cookie crumbs and cream cheese to create a batter.
    3. Form the dough into balls (number will vary, based on size) and place on a plate or cookie sheet.
    4. Melt the Kiva BlackBerry Dark Chocolate Bar in a bain-marie or microwave for 1 minute, stop to check, and then cook at 30-second intervals to make sure chocolate doesn’t overcook; thin with vegetable oil.
    5. Dip the cream cheese cookie balls in the chocolate, making sure they’re fully coated. If you don’t want to get messy use a toothpick to dip.
    6. Decorate the wet balls with the googly eyes and add the milk chocolate chips as horns.
    7. Refrigerate overnight to harden.

Note: This recipe is customizable as the measurements can be modified depending on your party’s size.

Rice Krispie Dipped Marshmallow Monster Bars

    For the last-minute party planner.

Prep: The day before Halloween. Usually takes 15 – 40 mins, depending on your decorative detail. Let harden overnight.

    Ingredients:

    Decorating Options:

    • Chocolate sprinkles
    • Edible googly eyes
    • Edible Halloween decorations (tiny ghouls, candy corn, etc.)
    • Marshmallows
    • White chocolate
    • Sprinkles

    Tools:

    • A large bowl
    • Your imagination
    • A helping hand (optional)

    Instructions:

    1. Cut the marshmallow rice treats in half or leaving as is.
    2. Melt the cannabis-infused chocolate bar in a bain-marie or microwave for 1 minute, stop to check, and then cook at 30-second intervals to make sure chocolate doesn’t overcook; thin with vegetable oil.
    3. Dip half of the Rice Krispie treat in the chocolate (you’ll want to tread lightly to start) and let them drip on the bars vertically to get that oozy, slimy look.
    4. Decorate your monster however you want and unleash your inner artist.
    5. Refrigerate your unique chocolate covered cannabis creature until hardened (1 hour – overnight).

Note: This recipe is especially enjoyable with friends; you can even have a contest for the most elaborate monster bar.

We hope you enjoy these creepy cannabis-infused treats. Remember, all medicated ingredients can be replaced with non-medicated chocolate so anyone can enjoy them.

  • Défoncé Chocolatier Vanilla Chocolate Bar (2018 Review)

The first time I watched Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory as a child I could feel the excitement as Charlie unwrapped his golden ticket–followed by feelings of terror thanks to a certain boat ride in the movie.

I still get a tinge of that same rush when I unwrap a Défoncé Chocolatier Vanilla Chocolate Bar. It feels like an exclusive ticket to a classy cannabis world I never knew existed.

The brand’s elegant packaging, unusual design, and gourmet taste create an upscale edible experience until the last bite. The lack of hellish imagery while surrounded by Oompa Loompas is also a plus.

Expectations are high, especially since I’ve grown to become an edibles snob. I’ve eaten more infused chocolate bars than I can count but this white one radiates high fashion like Nicole Kidman on the red carpet.

So I have a reason to head to The Grove for a hearty outdoor lunch with the infused vanilla bar as dessert before hitting the shops. I’m ready to feel en vogue. I’m also ready to stop imagining that Défoncé is Beyoncé’s long lost sister.

Is this fancy vanilla and white chocolate bar as palatable and potent as it is pretty? Let’s find out as we rip it open like E!’s snide red carpet panel in this extensive review.

  • In this Défoncé Chocolatier Vanilla chocolate bar review, you'll learn about its:

[Click any of the section titles below to jump there]

    Packaging, Labeling & Product Design

The Défoncé vanilla bar comes in a black, child-resistant zip bag.

Inside, the classy but minimally designed box includes the company’s gold-foiled logo (reminiscent of the Coach logo), dosage and a brief product description. In bright relief along the bottom band of the box is a pastel orange strip covered in a retro pattern that immediately speaks to me.

Lift the flap to reveal nutrition facts, ingredients, warnings, manufacture and best by dates, lot number and a dosage diagram.

While this chic package would look more appropriate in a Beverly Hills boutique than on a dispensary shelf, it’s mislabeled, like calling an avocado a “vegetable” or Paris Hilton a “singer.”

There are three different doses: 90mg on the bag, 86.9mg on the testing sticker, and 180mg on the box. I presume the sticker is accurate, though this inconsistency could be problematic if you’re worried about getting a precise dose, even with the diagram. I’d also like to know what strain was used.

After unwrapping the gold foil, the chocolate bar itself looks unlike anything I’ve seen: peppered white chocolate with a symmetrical triangular pattern that appears cut from marble. This meticulous attention shows just how far Défoncé Chocolatier goes to create a memorable edible experience.

I notice some people around me eyeing the gold foil and light grey color, but have no idea it’s infused. After rubbing my hands together like Mr. Burns and whispering “excellent” to myself, it’s time to shop!

    Quality, Ease of Use

Défoncé uses single origin, sun-grown cannabis that’s sustainably farmed in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Like winemakers and coffee growers, using cannabis from a single source with its own microenvironment and biome, or terroir, uniquely enriches the flavor and terpene profile.

It’s then infused with a solvent-free, CO2-extract that helps preserve the terps to produce a clear, clean and tasty extract.

The bar itself is made from simple, quality ingredients: 31% white chocolate, vanilla bean, and cannabis extract. It has a balanced richness that isn’t too sweet so I can taste the subtle complexity cannabis just below the surface. I’d eat it this even if it didn’t contain cannabis – you can crumble the irregular pieces on top of ice cream or melt it down into a fruit dip!

While the bar’s geometric pattern is distinct, the smaller, unusually shaped pieces are difficult to break into clean, accurate doses. Using a knife is a small and worthwhile sacrifice before indulging in this highly crafted edible.

    Potency, Effectiveness & Affordability

About an hour after lunch, I felt a change in perspective as I became more mindful of my surroundings. I noticed birds chirping and people chatting while passing the Coach store and examining the chic bags, dresses and accessories along the way, which helps melt my anxiety and stress–especially if I buy something.

I remained productive and clear-headed through the evening without the heavy sedative effects I sometimes feel with edibles. When I got home, I wasn’t as sleepy as expected from walking all day.

I’d eat this Défoncé Chocolatier Vanilla bar again before a concert, workout or any creative activity like cooking, painting or writing. This quality chocolate, distinct design and about 90mg THC for $20 makes me feel like a fashionista. Pardon me while I put on a black sun hat, oversized sunglasses, and fire everyone in my factory.

Nugg Score: How the Nugg Team Rates This Product

    Packaging: 5/5

    • Beautifully packaged with a generic child-resistant zip-bag.
    • Large branded sticker on both sides; proper protection.
    • Vanilla chocolate bar itself features a unique triangular design.

    Labeling: 3/5

    • Enough information for compliance, but the dosage label is contradictory in three places.
    • I’d like to have seen something about their business practices and type of extraction.

    Easy to Dose: 3.5/5

    • Dosage chart supplied on the package; chocolate bar has markings to help you with accuracy.
    • Because the THC content is contradictory be extra careful; trust the lab results and dose accordingly.
    • A bit too much chocolate to consume all at once for someone like me who prefers to ingest the entire 90mg bar.

    Discretion: 4/5

    • Can conceal any mention of cannabis right out of the wrapper.
    • In the box or on its own, this edible looks like any high-end chocolate bar.
    • But the box and bar are so large it’s hard to conceal you’re munching on something.

    Taste: 5/5

    • High-quality chocolate that’s rich blend of white chocolate and vanilla.
    • I would happily eat this again even if it didn’t contain cannabis.

    Texture: 4.5/5

    • Triangular pieces aren’t completely flat or smooth but protrude slightly.
    • Melted in my mouth just as smooth chocolate should.
    • Visible vanilla bean particles weren’t noticeable in my mouth.
    • Unless it’s a hot day or you’re holding this bar for too long, it won’t leave any residue on your fingers.

    Effectiveness: 5/5

    • An hour after consuming, I started to feel these clean and lucid effects arise.
    • Left me feeling productive and clear-headed without being overly sedative.
    • Ideal for activities like shopping, seeing a concert or working on something creative.

    Versatility: 5/5

    • Could incorporate this pure white chocolate with vanilla bean in numerous recipes. Think outside the box!
    • Melt then cover fruit (strawberries, raisins, bananas) or make a fancy frosting.
    • Crumble over frozen yogurt, ice cream or granola mix.
    • Use as “chips” for fresh-baked cookies.

    Consistency: 4/5

    • Same high-quality ingredients, design and flavor are always consistent.
    • Cannabinoid content fluctuates a bit per bar.

    Price: 4.5/5

    • Priced a $20, this is a pretty good deal for a chocolate bar that looks and tastes like it could sell for the same price without cannabis in a high-end supermarket.

    Overall Rating: 4.35

The white chocolate in this Défoncé Chocolatier vanilla bar is a nice change from the usual milk and dark chocolate offerings. You feel the effort that goes into their branding, packaging, design, ingredients and extraction from unwrapping to eating.

This edible’s effects were cerebral, euphoric, relaxing and creatively energizing that made trying on clothes and piecing together outfits more fun. For $20, I put this stylish edible at the top of my list when I want a lucid and creative high without sacrificing my productivity. I just wish I got a similar deal this afternoon (handbags are expensive).

  • The Ultimate CBD Recovery Guide

From professional athletes to children dealing with debilitating illnesses, people from all walks of life are ditching prescriptions and turning to more natural plant medicine. But it’s not just any plant; they’re seeking relief from one particular cannabis compound: cannabidiol, or CBD.

Even if you don’t use cannabis, you’ve probably heard of CBD. This cannabis compound took the nation by storm in 2013 when CNN reported on a six-year-old girl named Charlotte Figi. Four years prior, she was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, a myoclonic form of epilepsy, that prompts as many as 300 seizures a week.

After her parents administered an oral dose of CBD oil twice a day, that number dropped to just two or three seizures each month!

Since Charlotte’ story became public CBD has continued to rise in popularity. Most dispensaries carry CBD flower, vape cartridges, edibles, and topicals. Many health food stores now sell hemp-based CBD extracts, even in states that prohibit medical cannabis.

Because CBD is non-psychoactive (it doesn’t get you high), many who don’t smoke cannabis are able to enjoy the reported health benefits of this miraculous cannabinoid.

Aside from children finding epileptic relief, CBD is also gaining traction among pro athletes. Former NFL player Leonard Marshall, a former defensive end for the New York Giants, suffered a traumatic brain injury stemming from concussions, better known as CTE.

Rather than consuming a daily pharmaceutical cocktail, Marshall turned to hemp-based CBD oil to deal with CTE side effects like persistent headaches, mood swings and depression. Now he experiences relief within minutes after taking CBD, and his migraines are gone.

But what exactly is CBD and what can it actually do? We’ve separated fact from fiction to help you understand the latest research, how CBD can be used to aid recovery, and a handful of products that the Nugg Team has quality tested and approved.

  •

    What Is CBD?

CBD is one of many chemical compounds called cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The most popular and most widely known is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which makes you feel stoned. But CBD is different. The World Health Organization concluded that CBD alone doesn’t appear to cause intoxication.

In addition to seizure disorders, CBD is also frequently used to treat anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain. In fact, pain is the number one reason why pro athletes are putting away the pills and turning to cannabis.

When professional cyclist Andrew Talansky strained his hip flexor muscle, he turned CBD oil and found instant relief. Aside from that, he also tells Outside Magazine that the benefits didn’t stop there; he also felt less anxious and his sleep improved dramatically.

While CBD is generally considered safe to use, it does have the potential to affect certain medications, including blood thinners, so consult your physician before taking CBD.

Not all cannabis has high CBD levels; in fact, many strains available at your local recreational dispensary typically have little-to-no CBD. That’s because these commercially available strains were historically bred for their high THC content. This is changing.

Cannabis breeders increasingly recognize the demand for potent CBD strains. Some are beginning to select strains based on their ability to yield a high CBD and low THC: Sour Tsunami, Charlotte’s Web (named after Charlotte Figi), Ringo’s Gift and AC/DC, for example, typically test high in CBD.

What Do Researchers Say About CBD?

Many studies suggest that CBD may have positive health benefits. Researchers have found that orally-administered CBD may contain significant anti-inflammatory properties, offering the potential for pain reduction and reduced swelling. Another study reported that topically-administered CBD can help reduce pain and arthritic inflammation.

Neuroscientists have also studied CBD for its potential to manage symptoms of certain neurological disorders and its potential immunosuppressive properties. Another neurological study even suggested CBD might help reduce brain damage from neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease.

One patient study reported that CBD use in conjunction with pharmaceutical medication helped slow the progression of some ALS symptoms, giving the patient almost complete use of two affected limbs and slowing the pace of muscular degradation.

Like other cannabinoids, CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates endocrine function (glands that secrete hormones) and controls our energy balance. In fact, our ECS plays a key role in regulating a wide range of body processes, from brain function and immune tissues to our endocrine glands and digestive system.

Researches have also found that CBD may interact with receptor sites outside the ECS, illustrating the potential to treat inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

How Can I Use CBD to Help My Body Recover?

Cannabis patients and recreational users in legal states can purchase high-CBD flower, concentrates (including vape cartridges), topicals, edibles and tinctures.

If you don’t have this access, you might find CBD oil for sale online, but it’s most likely hemp derived and doesn’t offer the same benefits that MMJ patients report. This is due to the “entourage effect,” which means all of the cannabinoids and terpenes may offer greater benefits when combined as a whole plant or a whole-plant extract.

Because CBD shows promise treating inflammation, you may be wondering how to incorporate CBD into your recovery plan. First, talk to your doctor about your using CBD. Your doctor will need to review your health history as well as your medication list to make sure there is no risk of adverse side effects.

If your doctor recommends the use of CBD, then Nugg’s Cannabis Concierge service can help you find the right cannabis products for your needs, including products that are high in CBD. Here are a few of our favorites!

    Smokable Flower High in CBD

Smoking and vaping cannabis flower remain one of the most popular methods of consumption. But smoking a bowl or a joint doesn’t necessarily mean you have to get stoned! Try these Nugg favorites, which are high in CBD and low in THC to give you greater relief without causing intoxication the way most high-THC cannabis strains do.

    • Ritual CBD 20:1 1/8th (Henry’s Original): Offers a clean-burning flower that boasts a 20:1 ratio of CBD: THC. Our reviewers gave this strain high marks for its delicious aroma and superior smoke quality. This Henry’s Original strain also performed well in our ash test, and it delivered consistently exceptional effects.

    • Harmony Rose CBD 1/8th (Flow Kana): This prepackaged eighth of is pleasing to the senses and sure to meet your needs. The appearance, aroma, taste and effects of this high-CBD strain earned high praise from our reviewers, who also appreciated Flow Kana’s above average packaging and labeling.

    • JellyFish CBD (Glass House Farms): Nugg’s reviewers ranked this strain’s aroma and taste average among the pool, but Glass House Farms stood out in terms of its effects, consistency and clean-burning ash test. For the price, JellyFish offers a decent option for patients interested in trying CBD flower for the first time.

    Vape Cartridges High in CBD

Many patients looking for quick relief appreciate the convenience that cannabis vape pens and cartridges offer. Vaping gives you rapid onset of effects, no lingering smoke or smell, and the ability to easily dose out your medication. You can take a couple of hits then put it away, whereas a joint requires you to keep smoking or stub it out.

And the best thing about vaping? No harsh smoke on your lungs, which is especially beneficial for professional and endurance athletes.

World-renowned mixed-martial-arts fighter Nate Diaz vapes CBD oil to help recover from the physical torment of the ring. Despite the match’s outcome, Diaz takes a beating. Vaping CBD oil helps his body heal and reduces inflammation so that he can prepare for the next fight.

These vape cartridges/pens received high marks from our Nugg reviewers and can offer the relief you need:

    • Calm 10:1 CBD disposable pen (dosist): Our reviewers loved the packaging, labeling, and overall quality that dosist delivers. This disposable pen makes it easy to microdose, giving you precisely measured vape hits with a consistent 10:1 ratio of CBD:THC. No buttons or knobs, just a mouthpiece to inhale. The vapor tastes very flavorful, the oil is of high quality, and the effects come on quickly.

    • ACDC 3:1 CBD, 0.5 g Pax Era Pod (Bloom Farms): Our reviewers praised the taste, vapor quality, oil quality and effects. You’ll need to purchase a proprietary Pax battery that’s a bit costly but won’t regret it. You can swap out pods as easily as you insert a USB drive–and it pairs with an app that lets you adjust to the exact temperature you want. A quality pod in a pleasing package.

    • Marley Red CBD Rich, 0.5 g (Marley Natural): This vape cartridge offers a great tasting product with quality oil, decent vape quality and pleasant effects. The packaging left our reviewers a bit dissatisfied, but it’s a great product at a reasonable price – what’s not to love?

    Edibles High in CBD

While edibles offer long-lasting effects, they take longer to kick in than smokable or vapable cannabis. All of the CBD edibles listed below contain some degree of THC in addition to CBD, meaning you may feel more intoxicating effects than you would with a pure CBD treat.

So we recommend caution if you’re new to cannabis or edibles. Infused treats affect patients differently than smoking or vaping, so don’t overdo it. Remember to start with a low dose and be sure to wait at least an hour before increasing.

    • 1:1 THC to CBD Dark Chocolate (Chill): This delivers a balanced ratio of THC:CBD with 50mg of each per piece. Our reviewers found it well packaged, easy to dose, flavorful, consistent and effective. It’s a great product for a reasonable price.

    • 1:1 THC to CBD Cinnamon Mints (Breez): Also balanced with an equal THC:CBD ratio, the bottle has 20 mints containing 5mg of each in every one. Nugg reviewers appreciated the taste, discretion and ease of dosing.

    • 1:5 CBD to THC Indica Milk Chocolate Bar (Garden Society): If you’re new to edibles, this may not be the best place to start. It’s got a decent dose of CBD, 16mg, but also comes with a relatively high THC content, 80mg total! The effects hit hard so use caution; although veteran edibles eaters will appreciate the taste, texture and effectiveness.

    Topicals High in CBD

Topical products are applied externally to the skin. You can use topical balms or transdermal patches to target specific areas where you’re experiencing localized pain or inflammation. Lotions and soaking agents are also great options, and they easily offer widespread or whole body relief.

The best part is that you can easily use these products and, with the exception of transdermal patches, most CBD topicals don’t get you stoned!

Post-workout recovery, alleviating chronic pain, other recent injuries – topicals offer the symptom relief you need to rest up, sleep well, and feel better.

We understand that the number of cannabis options may be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to cannabis. Have questions? Our Cannabis Concierge service is here to help! Contact Nugg today to get the information you need and the medicated cannabis products you want!

  • Patient Condition Guide: Cannabis and Fibromyalgia

You wince in pain when a light breeze hits your neck or the fabric from loose clothing brushes against your leg. No matter how much you sleep, you wake up feeling exhausted – sometimes your skin feels like it’s sunburned and other times you feel a deep, debilitating ache that makes the smallest tasks an impossible feat.

    This is fibromyalgia.

Individuals living with it know all too well how life altering this condition can be. If your doctor has diagnosed you or someone you know with fibromyalgia, you should learn more about this condition and whether cannabis can help.

  •

    What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia affects the brain’s reaction to nerve signals that indicate pain. People experience lasting, widespread pain, especially in the muscles, tendons and joints.

That pain can also cause fatigue, trouble sleeping, difficulty remembering certain things, and problems with mood stability.

While people with fibromyalgia may experience pain differently, the most common reports of pain include increased sensitivity in the neck and shoulders, arms, back, hips and various points along the legs.

    What Causes Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia often sets in after severe distress on the body, including psychological trauma, but the exact cause is currently unknown. Prolonged stress and tension are thought to play a role, as symptoms typically set in after distress has set off other physical reactions to ongoing stress.

However, other people develop fibromyalgia after a severe illness or infection. Still, there are others who develop this condition without any apparent traumatic cause.

Fibromyalgia might be hereditary, but further genetic research is ongoing. Studies also suggest that women may be more likely to develop it than men, especially during the middle-age years. Still, this condition can affect anyone at just about any life stage.

Individuals with existing osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or ankylosing spondylitis (a form of arthritis that affects the spine) may have a higher risk of developing fibromyalgia, though it’s not considered an autoimmune or inflammation-centric condition.

If the doctor believes you may have fibromyalgia, he or she will perform several tests to check and rule out other conditions. He or she will ask about is whether you’ve experienced widespread pain that has persisted for at least three months.

Your doctor may also order one or more blood tests to make sure you don’t have another condition with overlapping symptoms.

    How Is Fibromyalgia Treated?

There’s no cure for fibromyalgia, but your doctor may recommend certain medications to help manage the symptoms. Medications frequently recommended to fibromyalgia patients include pain medications (over-the-counter like acetaminophen and prescription non-narcotic pain relievers), antidepressants, and sleep aids.

In addition to over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals, some sufferers also turn to cannabis to manage some of their symptoms.

Which States Allow Cannabis for Fibromyalgia Treatment?

Though a number of states allow doctors to recommend medical cannabis for chronic pain symptoms, only a handful explicitly consider fibromyalgia to be a qualifying condition. This includes the following states:

    • Arkansas
    • Connecticut
    • Illinois
    • North Dakota
    • Ohio

If you live in one of these five and your doctor has diagnosed you with fibromyalgia, you may be eligible for medical cannabis – but you’ll first need a written recommendation.

You may also be eligible if you’ve been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and live in a state that considers chronic pain to be a qualifying condition. Talk to your doctor about using cannabis as a part of your ongoing fibromyalgia treatment plan and discover if it’s right for you.

Current Research on Cannabis and Fibromyalgia

Relieving pain, coping with stress and sleeping well are important for fibromyalgia patients as these factors tend compliment fatigue, cognitive struggles, anxiety and depression.

Though the medical community remains divided on cannabis’ medical efficacy, several select studies offer optimistic results.

A 2016 report by German researchers suggests that naturally occurring cannabinoids found in cannabis may help fibromyalgia patients cope with pain, inflammation and stress. This is an important consideration, as some medical experts believe prolonged stress may contribute to developing fibromyalgia in some individuals.

Studies also suggest that cannabis may be able to help fibromyalgia patients experience less stiffness, better sleep, and a general improvement in well being. Periods of relaxation appear to be an important component to manage overall wellness and improve flaring up symptoms.

Another study that tracked cannabis use across a sample pool of 26 fibromyalgia patients found all participants experienced significant improvements in symptom management and overall quality of life. Half of the participants stopped taking their prescribed pharmaceutical medications altogether due cannabis’ relief. However, further large-scale clinical studies are required.
