Frequently asked. Frequently answered.

  • Ohio residents 18 and older with a qualifying condition and certification from their physician can register with the state’s medical marijuana program. Minors under 18 must have an adult caregiver and consent from their parent or another person responsible for providing consent to treatment.

  • Most patients in Ohio qualify under existing conditions, but there is a process to add conditions that aren’t listed. The process is slow and takes roughly a year. To add a qualifying condition in Ohio, the patient must submit a petition to the Ohio State Medical Board. You can learn more about the process on the Ohio State Medical Board’s website.

  • Your physician must authorize the use of a caregiver in Ohio and link the caregiver to you in the state’s database if you need one. Your doctor is the only person who can complete this step. A patient can link up to two caregivers to their account, and no caregiver can serve more than two patients.

Once the physician enters the caregiver into the database, they will receive an email to complete the registration process. Caregivers must be approved by the State Board of Pharmacy, which can take up to seven business days

The caregiver application fee is $0.01.

  • Having a medical marijuana card in Ohio is the only way to legally purchase or possess cannabis in the state for now. Voters approved full legalization with the November 2023 vote, but state regulators have 9 months to create regulations for legal sales, after which the department will need to begin the licensing process. It could take a year or more for legal sales to start.

Even after recreational sales begin, having an Ohio medical card will carry a range of benefits. Buying cannabis legally ensures access safe, tested medicine, so it’s best to keep your card. Once legal sales start, patients will be exempt from the states 10% sales tax on recreational products. Patients also benefit from increased legal protections. Most importantly, patients receive proper medical guidance from their physicians, helping them to work cannabis into their health and wellness routine for maximum benefit.

  • It only costs $139 to get an Ohio MMJ evaluation with NuggMD, and there’s no risk because patients who don’t qualify for the program will get their recommendation for free! After the evaluation, patient registrations cost $0.01, with caregivers paying $0.01. This is in addition to the cost of your evaluation. Patients who qualify for Indigent or Veteran status can apply to have their fees reduced.

  • Ohio medical marijuana patients are allowed the following limits (patients with a terminal illness have higher limits):

    • Cannabis plant material: 9oz (10oz for terminal patients)
    • Cannabis topicals: 26.55g of THC (29.5g of THC for terminal patients)
    • Cannabis edibles & tinctures: 9.9g of THC (11g of THC for terminal patients)
    • Cannabis vaporization Oils: 53.1g of THC (59g of THC for terminal patients)
  • Medical marijuana patients in Ohio can purchase cannabis from any Ohio MMCP dispensary location. Cannabis delivery is not available for either medicinal or recreational purposes in Ohio.

Patients can purchase oils, tinctures, capsules, plant material, edibles, lotions, creams, and transdermal patches. Use of medical marijuana by smoking or combustion is prohibited, but the law does allow for vaping plant material and a metered oil or solid preparation for vaping.

Cannabis cultivation for personal use is not allowed under Ohio law, even with a medical marijuana recommendation.

  • Since marijuana is still federally illegal, insurers will not reimburse for the cost of medical marijuana products.

  • Your physician will upload your approval to the state’s database within 24 to 48 hours. You’ll receive an email shortly after inviting you to complete your registration with the state. Only click the provided link once! If you click it multiple times, you’ll receive an error message and will need to submit an email to the state to get your link re-issued. Once you’ve registered and paid the state registration fee, you’ll be able to print out your card and use it at a dispensary.

  • With NuggMD, you are ONLY charged for your evaluation if you are approved. We believe everyone deserves access to a qualified medical cannabis doctor, and the cost of an evaluation shouldn’t be a barrier.

  • You’ll only be charged if you’re approved for your medical marijuana certification. If not, your evaluation is free! If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. You can also change your mind after your evaluation if you wish and request a refund, but you must do so before your certification has been submitted to the state. Once you’ve been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.
