How to be a medical cannabis caregiver in Connecticut
Some patients choose to have – or are required to have – a designated caregiver who can purchase cannabis on their behalf. They’re also allowed to transport it and prepare it for patient use.
In Connecticut, your physician must authorize the use of a caregiver if you need one. If your doctor decides that you should have a primary caregiver to help obtain and administer your cannabis, you will need to register your qualified caregiver before the Department will complete your registration certificate.
It’s important to note that the Department won’t finish your application until your primary caregiver’s application is complete and approved. You’ll need to complete the caregiver information and provide a valid email address so your caregiver can be notified to complete their part of the application.
To qualify as your caregiver, they must:
- be responsible for the management of the wellbeing of the registered patient concerning their palliative use of cannabis
- be at least 18 years of age
- be responsible for only one patient at a time unless the patients are siblings and the caregiver is their parent or guardian
- be a guardian, legal custodian or parent if the patient is an adult that lacks legal capacity
Caregivers cannot:
- use the patient’s cannabis,
- be the patient’s doctor,
- purchase more than the maximum amount allowed for the patient
There is no fee for the caregiver application.
How to register for a med card in Connecticut
Follow the instructions once you start the NuggMD process to fill out your application. Make sure you enter all of your information accurately to avoid possible delays in your processing. When you’re approved, your NuggMD medical marijuana doctor will initiate the state registration process by entering your information into the state database.
Once your doctor completes this process, you’ll receive email notification to finish your state registration via their online portal. You’ll need to enter all of the requested information and the state no longer charges a registration fee as of July 1, 2023.
How to renew your med card in Connecticut
Renewing your medical marijuana card in CT is an annual requirement for the program. Patient IDs expire on the day the doctor certified a patient, not the day you submit your info to the state.

The list of debilitating medical conditions is maintained by the Department of Consumer Protections. As such, the Department Commission has established a Board of Physicians, all of whom are state-licensed physicians and surgeons. This board will be responsible for recommending to the Department of Consumer Protection other debilitating medical treatments, or diseases that should also be eligible for the use of medical marijuana. Not only that, but the Department of Consumer Protection has laid out regulations on medical marijuana to allow members of the public to present a petition to the Board if they wish to recommend other qualifying medical conditions or treatments.

If you sign up and pay for your evaluation, but then cancel before your evaluation, there is a small $10 fee for the payment processing. You can also change your mind after your evaluation if you wish and request a refund, but you must do so before your certification has been submitted to the state. Once you’ve been certified, a refund for services will no longer be available. Please send an email to support@nuggmd.com with the subject line “Refund Request” and a brief description of your issue. We want to make sure you’re 100% satisfied with your purchase being that you, the customer, are the most important thing to us! Once a refund has been initiated, please allow 3-5 business days for the funds to transfer back to the card you used for the transaction. A refund is no longer available more than 30 days after the date of your evaluation. If any issues arise, please feel free to reach back out for further assistance.

You can use a non-expired ID from another state if you don’t have a Connecticut state-issued ID, but you’ll be required to provide other proof of residency if you do so, such as a bill, paystub, or Medicaid statement. The proof of residency must be dated within the last 90 days, be computer generated (not typed), and show your name and Connecticut address.
