About Medical Marijuana in Connecticut

Marijuana was decriminalized by then governor Dannel Malloy in 2011. When Malloy signed the bill, he emphasized that he was in no way legalizing cannabis in the state, but simply wanted to reprioritize law enforcement for more important matters. The next year, he signed Connecticut's medical marijuana program into law as well.

The program was very limited at first, but has grown over the years. There are now several dispensaries in the state, more than 30 qualifying conditions for approval, and chronic pain has been added to this list (with specific requirements), which greatly increases access for Connecticut residents.

Marijuana is not approved for recreational use in Connecticut yet despite being decriminalized for more than a decade. However, the state is working on legalization plans with the 2021 legislative session.

More About Connecticut

Connecticut is the United State's third smallest state by area, and they're the 4th most-densely populated. As a major hub of the Eastern Seaboard, some of the largest cities in the state include Hartford, New Haven, Norwalk, Danbury, Greenwich, New Britain, Stamford and Bridgeport, which is Connecticut's largest city by population.

Home of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Hartford Wolf Pack, ice hockey is a huge pastime in the state. Residents also love to catch "The Game" at the Yale Bowl in New Haven -- a biennial game between the Harvard Crimson and Yale Bulldogs that represents one of the nation's oldest college rivalries.

Notable people from Connecticut include George H. W. Bush, who was raised in Greenwich, and his son George W. Bush who also served as president. Karen and Richard Carpenter of The Carpenters were born in New Haven.  The state was also, unsurprisingly, home to Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy fame.
