Unlike many others on this list, he doesn\u2019t stop at decriminalizing or moving cannabis to a Schedule II drug. For a long time she was against legal cannabis but in recent years has changed her stance, even supporting the ballot initiative for Adult Use in Massachusetts during the 2016 election.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">She&#8217;s also supported efforts rallying the federal government to protect banking access for vendors working with state-sanctioned legal cannabis operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 24px;\">Cory Booker (D-New Jersey)<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2896 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cb-281x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cory Booker\" width=\"275\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cb-281x300.jpg 281w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cb.jpg 334w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Cory Booker is also one of the democrats&#8217; rising stars.\u00a0As a young African American growing up in Newark during the height of the War On Drugs, it&#8217;s\u00a0a safe to assume he&#8217;s seen the harmful effects of cannabis prohibition firsthand, from mass incarceration to police-civilian distrust. Booker is an official sponsor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/114th-congress\/senate-bill\/683\">CARERS Act<\/a>,\u00a0a bill that would end the federal ban on medical cannabis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">It&#8217;s worth noting that Booker has historically <strong>received several\u00a0high-dollar political donations from pharmaceutical companies<\/strong>. A former presidential contender, war hero and top Republican senator, he&#8217;s been a public servant for decades. But<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">\u00a0you may be surprised to know that this Republican top dog is pretty supportive of legalizing weed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">For him, it comes down to simple economics. As long as the U.S. creates a demand for drugs, there will be a black market to meet that demand. He&#8217;s come under fire after embarrassing himself on a debate stage (and on <em>Dancing with the Stars<\/em>), only to be appointed head of the EPA\u2014despite saying he&#8217;d shut it down if elected president. Perry said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">&#8220;After 40 years of the war on drugs, I can\u2019t change what happened in the past. What I can do as the governor of the second largest state in the nation is to implement policies that start us toward a decriminalization and keeps people from going to prison and destroying their lives, and that\u2019s what we\u2019ve done over the last decade.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 24px;\">Gavin Newsom (D-Lt. For Newsom, decriminalization is about social justice, citing the outright failure of the War on Drugs.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">He&#8217;s spoken at many cannabis industry conferences and events, produced top-dollar fundraising dinners with <a href=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/organization-working-patient-rights\/\">cannabis advocacy groups<\/a>, and p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">ulled together a blue ribbon group, with members from law enforcement to civil rights groups, to release a report on legal cannabis policy recommendations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2\"><strong>Politicians Opposing Cannabis Legalization<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 24px;\">Jeff Sessions (R-Attorney General)<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/js.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2901 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/js-286x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/js-286x300.jpg 286w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/js-381x400.jpg 381w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/js-768x806.jpg 768w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/js-572x600.jpg 572w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/js.jpg 889w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 275px) 100vw, 275px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">If you haven\u2019t heard of Jeff Sessions by now, chances are you live under a rock. The former Alabama senator turned Attorney General has some pretty ridiculous stances about cannabis and the people who use it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Some of his most famous sound bytes include: <strong>\u201cGood people don\u2019t smoke marijuana\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cMarijuana is only slightly less awful than heroin.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Sessions is the most troubling figure because of his radically negative ideas and his power to act on them. As Attorney General he&#8217;s already floated the idea of <strong>bringing back harsh mandatory minimum sentencing<\/strong> and has asked Congress to repeal an amendment keeping the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/\">DOJ <\/a>from prosecuting states with legalized weed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 24px;\">Rob Portman (R-Ohio) &amp; Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio)<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/portman_brown.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2903 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/portman_brown-300x151.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/portman_brown-300x151.jpg 300w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/portman_brown-400x201.jpg 400w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/portman_brown-768x386.jpg 768w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/portman_brown-1000x502.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/portman_brown-1024x514.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">An unlikely duo, these\u00a0<strong>two senators from opposing sides of the aisle<\/strong> have found common ground in their fight against legalizing cannabis in Ohio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Democrat Brown believes it&#8217;s a gateway drug, regardless of the scientific evidence proving it&#8217;s not. Luckily, he admits the importance of looking into the plant&#8217;s medicinal benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Despite admitting to smoking it as a youth, Republican Portman also thinks marijuana is a danger to our country because it&#8217;s a gateway drug that could exacerbate the state&#8217;s ravaging <a href=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/cannabis-replace-opioids\/\">opioid<\/a>\u00a0epidemic.
