Unlike any other medical discovery or new pharmaceutical drug, access to medical cannabis has to be won by the people. The organization spends all its time advocating for patients and doesn\u2019t seem likely to\u00a0stop until every potential patient has access to the life-saving plant. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">ASA&#8217;s work touches every facet of the medical cannabis world: lobbying, writing fair policies, ensuring high quality products and lab testing, and providing legal services to medical cannabis patients. Its\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.safeaccessnow.org\/2016_accomplishments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 accomplishments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\"> alone are evidence enough of its persistence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Its 2016 state policy work included creating new medical programs in Pennsylvania and Ohio, working with dozens of regulators to pass \u201csafety protocols based on AHPA guidelines,\u201d helping with pesticide guidance in Maryland, and working with lawmakers in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah to improve CBD laws. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">On a federal policy level, ASA worked to file a petition under the Information Quality Act that it hopes will force the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/dea-search-history-cannabis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug Enforcement Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">\u00a0(DEA) to alter its position on medical cannabis, lobby to extend the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment protecting state medical cannabis programs from prosecution by the DOJ, and urge ranking House and Senate members to vote on the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion, and Respect States (CARERS) Act, which will hopefully create harmony between federal and state cannabis laws. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Needless to say, Americans for Safe Access is one of the hardest working cannabis patient advocacy groups today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.veteransformedicalmarijuana.org\/\"><strong>Veterans for Medical Cannabis Access<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/veterans-logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2817 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/veterans-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/veterans-logo.jpg 200w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/veterans-logo-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/veterans-logo-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Sue Sisley, former Veterans Affairs physician and top medical cannabis science expert,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">\u00a0is conducting groundbreaking research proving medical cannabis&#8217; potential to be <\/span><b>a very effective treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">. Sisley is the first researcher to receive FDA approval for a study on smoking cannabis as a treatment for PTSD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Her inspiration for the study? Veterans. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Veterans are one of the most vulnerable groups when it comes to PTSD and a host of other health issues, including chronic pain, depression and anxiety. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">When you consider that <\/span><b>22 U.S. veterans a day commit suicide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">, you realize the issue demands immediate attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Led by Executive Director Michael Krawitz, a disabled U.S. Air Force vet, Veterans for Medical Cannabis Access\u00a0(VMCA) works with the Veterans Health Administration to craft policy that&#8217;ll ensure veterans have access to medical cannabis. The organization also works with individual state governments to ensure PTSD and chronic pain become qualifying conditions recognized by every state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The VMCA saw a big win this past April when Colorado, one of the largest medical cannabis markets, passed legislation <a href=\"http:\/\/extras.denverpost.com\/app\/bill-tracker\/bills\/2017a\/sb_17-017\/\">(SB17-017)<\/a> through the Senate that includes PTSD as a qualifying condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">This is why organizations like VMCA are so important in the fight for patient access. Most Americans have a compassionate stance towards veterans, realizing the sacrifices these brave men and woman have made for our country. This understanding, plus the deserved help they could get from accessing medical cannabis, makes veterans excellent spokespeople for cannabis reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpp.org\/\"><strong>Marijuana Policy Project<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Marijuana_Policy_Project_logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2818 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Marijuana_Policy_Project_logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Marijuana_Policy_Project_logo.png 250w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Marijuana_Policy_Project_logo-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Marijuana_Policy_Project_logo-50x50.png 50w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) has been working to reform cannabis laws since 1995. MPP believes the most harmful side effect of cannabis is prison, so its main focus is criminal justice reform by reforming cannabis laws. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">While <\/span><b>patients aren\u2019t its main focus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0like ASA, it does <\/span><b>lobby for laws<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">\u00a0<strong>allowing seriously ill patients safe access to cannabis based on a valid doctor\u2019s recommendation. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">MPP has seen much success in its efforts to decriminalize, legalize or provide a true medicinal market in several states across the country. In 2016, the organization celebrated success in Ohio when Governor John Kasich signed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.ohio.gov\/legislation\/legislation-documents?id=GA131-HB-523\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB 523<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">, \u201cmaking Ohio the 25th state to adopt a workable medical marijuana law\u201d so \u201cseriously ill patients will no longer be treated like criminals and will have reasonable access to medicine.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The organization also celebrated the successful passage of legislation it helped write, making Pennsylvania the country&#8217;s 24th medical cannabis state. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.drugpolicy.org\/\"><strong>Drug Policy Alliance<\/strong><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/DPA-Logo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2819 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/DPA-Logo-300x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/DPA-Logo-300x281.jpg 300w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/DPA-Logo-400x374.jpg 400w, https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/DPA-Logo.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">Like MPP and unlike ASA, the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) focuses on more than just medical cannabis patients. The organization also<\/span><b>\u00a0emphasizes the <a href=\"https:\/\/getnugg.com\/blog\/congressional-cannabis-caucus-legalization\/\">legalization<\/a> and regulation of all drugs and the implementation of smarter, safer public policy.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The DPA states that it&#8217;s committed to \u201clegalizing marijuana at the state and federal levels and improving medical marijuana programs to better protect patients\u2019 rights and access to medicine.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">The organization is lobbying the U.S. Senate to vote &#8220;YES&#8221; on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.safeaccessnow.org\/senate_carers_act_petition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CARERS Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">, the first bill to ever call for the federal legalization of medical cannabis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #000000;\">With 29 states and D.C. legalizing medical cannabis use, it\u2019s sometimes hard to remember that the battle for patient rights is far from over.
